In late August I took a Vision XO 13' 6" to the Conon for a week on an extended user test. You will find my report here on Just One Week.

As usual I stress the point that I have no financial or other connection with Vision, nor do I receive any financial inducements from them. Just One Week is an entirely non-monetised blog. The opinions in the report are entirely my own.

For years I have been a beacon of steadfast economy, but now, having retired from formal work in May after more than 50 years, I felt like giving myself a little pat on the back (a week's consulting in Oman helps!).

However, well spotted.....

My great-grandfather and grandfather (born in Askrigg) were from Wensleydale. My father was born in London owing to his father's temporary detachment there by his company but was raised in what is now called Cleveland. My father married a Devonian at the outbreak of World War 2 and after the war went to work in his father-in-law's company, hence my being raised in Devon. I married a Yorkie in the 70s and this has been my home ever since. So I'm respectably connected even if not 100%.

I know this thread is a couple of years old but in my defence I’m new to the forum (1st post) so please bear with me. I’m just about to begin my fourth season of salmon fishing and while I’ve loved learning to cast with and fishing with my 13’ Oracle I feel I’ve reached a point where I’m ready for an upgrade so have been reading as many reviews as I can before hitting the tackle shop and hopefully trying out one or two.
I was seriously impressed with this review of the Vision XO 13’ 6” #8 by MCXFisher (Vision should sign him up as a brand ambassador) however, I wondered if anyone could offer up any strong contenders to add to my short list alongside the XO?

Ferretwrangler,

welcome to the Forum, which is a wonderful asset for novices and indeed everyone else.

To help you Vision have introduced the Custom range of rods one price step below the XO (which has gained a graphene layer and a price hike). I haven't had a chance to try the Custom rods but hope to get my hands on one later this year. Interestingly, they have adopted an unusual design aim: rather than having a consistent action across the range, they claim to have optimised the action of each rod to match the likely circumstances of its use. There are benefits of such an approach - there were signs of it in the short-lived MAG range - but it would mean that the 13 and 14 footers might have very different characters, and you'd need to be clear as to your user requirement.

There's also the entry level Hero 13' 7", which is one of the nicest rods I've used in years. Indeed, as I said in the review, if I didn't already have the XO, I would have bought the Hero. Its greatest virtue is the way in which it communicates everything going on in the cast through your hands through an action that handles a very wide range of lines exceptionally well.

Outside the Vision range, the last two rods I tried were both Sage Igniters, which I wouldn't recommend to you at your early stage of development. You might, however, wish to try the Sage Sonic 13' 6", which has a fuller action and at an RRP of ÂŁ949 is closer to the XO, or the Pulse at the same length RRP ÂŁ699.

I haven't tried any of the new range of Hardy or Loop rods, so can't suggest either way.
