Will fish the middle river. I naively hoped the lower river would come good for early march but this latest spate of 5’ seems to have made that look unlikely with further rain next week

I can't remember the last year the lower river fished before May.

I doubt whether this will become law or if it did whether it would be enforced but it is another bit of publicity.

lots of publicity gary but not much action on the salmon front, NRW don't seem to consider it their problem or maybe not a problem at all, its the precautionary principle you know, WUF are just going around in circles. Of course there is the Barbel, and some good match fishing at Hereford (only)?

Yes all the weights were around Hereford
The Barbel have been disappearing on the Wye for some years now and Chub are filling the gap left. Even the diehard defenders from the "There is no problem with the river" brigade are starting to change their tune

some of the match anglers are using cwts of groundbait plus loose feed

Gary. Where have you seen evidence of the diehard defenders changing their tune? I t seems to me like there are two camps, the Coarse anglers who in the main don't see a problem and the salmon anglers and environmentalist who do..

Trev as you say up till now it has mostly been two groups.
I Barbel fish on the Wye, Severn and Avon plus more farther afield. I am also a member of various groups.
Up until a couple of years ago when you mentioned anything about the fishing getting worse the reply would mostly be "there are loads of fish it's just bad angling"
You notice now that the Ostriches have either clammed up or changed sides. Also there is a dearth of photos with Barbel in them.
A couple of years ago I had some heated discussions with several Pro guides who were adamant there was not a problem, I suppose if they had said otherwise it would be the proverbial turkey voting for christmas. But most of them have now changed their tune and are not so vocal.

I ran through the WUF coarse catch returns for February the other day 26th maybe and for 26 rods they had caught 36 Chub between them.

Surely these days borders are fluid ? Wales could lay claim to Scotland or vice versa once The Don has bought Scotland, the top of the Wye and Severn would be in the USA ...Its a really , really great thing .....as he would opine.

Probably going to have a day on the Wye. I do it about once every two years.

It was dropping nicely yesterday at Builth Wells, below Monmouth it needs to drop another 3 foot 6 inches. Might be ok on some middle beats

Looking good at Wilton Bridge with colour dropping out nicely. It is still a bit high and we will probably be chucking ironmongery at Ross AC but might be ok for the fly. I just know it's been a long closed season and I'm itching to get out.

Lets us hope that 2025 brings more joy for us Salmon Fishers

Fingers crossed, im new to Salmon fishing and will be trying the Wye this year for the first time.
I tried the Severn last year a couple of times without any joy.
Plan to get out more this year.
