Yes all the weights were around Hereford
The Barbel have been disappearing on the Wye for some years now and Chub are filling the gap left. Even the diehard defenders from the "There is no problem with the river" brigade are starting to change their tune
Gary. Where have you seen evidence of the diehard defenders changing their tune? I t seems to me like there are two camps, the Coarse anglers who in the main don't see a problem and the salmon anglers and environmentalist who do..

Looking good at Wilton Bridge with colour dropping out nicely. It is still a bit high and we will probably be chucking ironmongery at Ross AC but might be ok for the fly. I just know it's been a long closed season and I'm itching to get out.

Fingers crossed, im new to Salmon fishing and will be trying the Wye this year for the first time.
I tried the Severn last year a couple of times without any joy.
Plan to get out more this year.
👍 Good for you, best of luck.

Fished the Ross AC Weirend stretch this afternoon, Rich fished this morning. Just fished Tobies and Mors all the way down to the Bottom Pool which is quite a hike.
Couple of tugs and one hooked and lost at a place we locally call the Barrels. I think it may have been a ST which we sometimes get early season, the afternoon sun was in my eyes and it was 20 yards away, very silvery. It jumped about a foot out of the water and the hook fell out ,barbless hooks eh!
Other than that nothing that suggested silver tourists but a lovely day to be outside beats gardening hands down.

Quick question, what are Mors.

The thing I like about MORS spoons are they come in different weights for the same "footprint" size. The photo above shows from the left 10g, 12g, 14g and 19g all are MORS size 2 the difference is in the thickness of the spoon. So you can fish them at different depths. Unlike for instance Tobies which generally change size in all dimensions.

Thanks for the reply,
I've never heard of MORS spoons.
Do you think it would be worth me getting a couple.
In the current climate/situation I can't say you will do any better with MORS rather than other makes but they do have a different action and I like them. I also find that the light ones around the 10g weight are thin enough to be used paternoster style and will keep off the bottom in a good flow..

After the misery that we suffered in the middle/lower Wye last year with lots of rain and river too high for us to fish this year is turning out to be so different.
I fished Ross waters at Weirend this afternoon and managed to wade some sections without any bother. The River at Ross look very good at the moment and continues to improve as this weekend approaches. It should be good for the coarse fishers, their last weekend for a while, and hopefully for the salmon fishers. Someone somewhere surely has to take the first salmon of the year and hopefully it will be one of us at Ross.....

I took this fantastic brownie today not on the fly rod but on a black toby, 20 inches long and about 3lb. it hit the lure very hard and for the briefest of moments I thought I was in.

Nothing at Ross other than this bit of a vague report of interest , an experienced pike fisherman was lure fishing and had a ‘huge’ salmon go for his lure on the River above the A40 bridge over the Wye dividing Upper Benhall from Lower Benhall.

So anyone been out on the river this week ? How’s it looking I heard of a fish lost yesterday on the middle river but nothing else - I’m hoping to wet a line middle of next week
Nothing to report at Ross. A good few members have been out but nothing has been seen. The River is just about perfect for us in respect of viz and height.
We appear to be having a good few trout though and of a good size mainly on metalwork more than recent years. So we are working on it!

i've been happy with simms with vibram and my own studs added for over 10 years

in my experience felt soles and wet grass banks aren't a good combination :D
And don't be embarrassed by also using a wading staff. Remember you only drown once! 😮

I’ve got the 6501C and a couple of 6001C abus from the 80’s. (Left hand wind) Due to the (higher) position of the handle I find much less back ache than a fixed spool when spinning and also great for the Devon. Recently stripped them right down and serviced - with the help of YouTube - new bearings and drag washers. Will find out how well they cast tomorrow.
Does this mean you are lefthanded or are you old school and right handed apart from the use of multipliers. The ABU numbering system was always numbered eg. 5000 for right handers and 5001 for left handers

The Wye at Ross is about a close to perfect as it can be. The clarity is excellent more than two metres for sure. The water temperature is not yet too high although the brightness over the last few weeks is not conducive to good fishing. At Ross we have had to content ourselves with trout and coarse fish caught OOS and a couple of sightings of salmon and one fish lost at the net.

So with 9 fish so far I'm daring to address the elephant in the room and ask when are we going to see some fish.

So any reports or glimmers of hope anyone ? Got out today but other than clear skies and bitter wind I can offer no further excuses for nil return , other than suspected general absence of fish, water looked perfect still a great day out .
We had three out on Ross waters but no reports of anything being seen let alone touched apart from 8lb pike for RW. Everything seems very quiet. Despite the conditions being apparently perfect. 😟

When Wyesham are fishing full rods 7 days a week and getting 1 you know there is nothing coming in , a couple seen I have heard but all quiet even on big spring tides
Yes we know and we are all watching Wyesham with great interest. But we can't just sit on our thumbs, wait and do nowt, got to get out the house! Suppose I could go back to golf or philately. :(
