had a good day on the finn yesturday besides the cold water temps and upstream wind in the morning. but wasnt to bad later on. fished hard all day with no rewards but enjoyed exploring new parts of the river we never fished before all lovely fly water. and was nice to meet a few forum members up there. badbastie. phatagrova. and jeamscasy

Four foot at Glenmore Bridge. Weather totally dried up. Looking good for tomorrow but will stay big for much of today. May be worth a throw at the end of today if the drop continues at this rate. Update this evening.
the lower river is out in the fields from Strabane up ....

Feck!
When the Finn decides to rise, it does it in style!!!
surprised to see you using such a stupidly long rod there given the good advice previously on the subject...it must be every inch of 15 foot, how ever did you manage?:D:D:D:D

Red counts

One other thing bibio do you know what the red counts were for the Finn and reelins and all its tribs.
You can tell us all the truth without your bosses knowing.I was up all the rivers at the end of November and in December and i seen plenty of fish and reds also.I also seen reds which would not have been counted on sections of the river were i know fish spawn.

I also have to say with the fish i seen on the beds it certainly contradicts the killygordan fish counter taking into account what anglers caught also. I know its a minimum count but why the recent deductions in counts now when any anglers on the finn know the count is all but rubbish. Is it to make the finn look bad to get the remaining nets off because we all know the finns spring run in recent years has been nothing but spectacular. The june run has totally gone due to the commercial men on the foyle but in saying that it got a fair share of them from july onwards.Do you agree that the nets destroyed the grilse fishing on the finn for the month of june.

I think Bibio's revelation was a misjudgement since he is now potentially a target for the frustration many anglers describe on the forum.

In fairness it is not any one person's fault, and the whole shebang needs to be re-evaluated, in my opinion.

The thing about redd counts is that we do not know what it is they do, and rather than try and count ALL the redds it is my suspicion that they have a set routine of checking a certain number of known spawning areas each year on each river at a certain date and maintaining year on year comparisons.

The redd count on the Faughan was completed by Xmas and it was discovered that significant spawning activity was still going on in February.

I couldn't agrre with you more fiery brown. Spawning this year was particularly late. In the region I am familiar with redd counts are done on a very limited sample basis that are wholly inaccurate. No allowences are made for water levels, temperature etc.

I spoke with a NRFB officer who retired last year after more than 40 years in the job. He remembered "Redd Duty" when 2 officers were billeted locally from mid December, right over Christmas and into the New Year to protect the salmon on the spawning beds and to subsequently count the redds.

I know this generation is supposed to be much more conservation minded than previous ones but it just goes to show how far the prioritisation of salmon protection has fallen.
