Hey Paul,

I used a 720 Airflo Skagit with 15' Rio 129 grain tips on that rod for big fly and windy conditions. With that combo it easily sails 100'+.

Of course, for Scandi, the custom Steve Godshall line will work. You could also try a similar grained Airflo or Rio Scandi line. They would be shorter than the SGS line.

I would also think any Nextcast FF or WA in a 9/10 should work.

I also saw your video postings and noted you're a top-hand dominant caster. The key to the MKS rods is underhand power (or at least 40% lower hand power). With an underhand stroke you'll feel the rod bend into the butt and then it literally sling shots the line out.

I tried the 10wt Powerlite last weekend and it was lovely with a 10/11 CND GPS line.

Keep at it. I hope you find a rod that works for you.

I have a 14 foot MKS 9/10

anybody recommend suitable lines?

The Steve Godshall heads work well . You can also get Bob to ask Steve to make you a B.C Scandi kit tailoured to match your rod .
For the lines we get over here I have used 10/11 Rio Outbound at 42 grams.
Rio AFS Hover 42 grams with the front 6 feet chopped off but with 10 ft rio tips.
The Mackenzie heads also go well on this rod especially the 44gram . The 42 gram ones made the rod needlesly fast although it managed fine I just didnt feel the butt working the same . The Guidline triple D's at 44gram also fly off this rod . Try and forget that this rod is a 9/10 and think of it more like a 10/11 and you will get on alot better . It has the heart and soul of any 15ft's I have used without being a poker . I also used the Carron Jetstream 65ft 9/10 and it went fine . Springer gave me a skagit line up the Dee and it was 660 grains with a 15ft tip of jesus christ how much sink rate T 17 or 18 ?? Anyway this also flew off the rod like ****e off a shovel with very very little effort .

Anyway Compy - get some pictures up of your new weapon .

Will be very interested to hear how you get on with the 14' MKS , that's the next on my list.
Had a shot with one in Norway and it really was fantastic, think the owner was using a Carton jetstream line through it.
Power house but still a "fishing" rod and not just a casting tool if that makes sense.

13'6 8/9 Meiser MKS

Afternoon all,

While there is an MKS thread going. I've just had got a standard build 13'6 8/9 MKS from Bob. Haven't had a chance to cast it yet, just wondering what lines people have found that are sweet to cast, skagits, shooting heads and spey lines.

I've seen the posted grain window just after people's own experiences.

Cheers

Pete

I bought one of these as well - custom build . I have had no time to upload pictures as of yet .
I was using it up the Dee a few weeks ago . Real wee powerhouse . Although it says 8/9 . I wouldn't bother using 8/9 heads on it as they will be too light .
If you work by its grain window it is 550- 850 off the top of my head when we are talking about shooting heads this makes it 9/10 lines .
I tried a Rio Outbound on it 9/10 at 38 grams - It flew and the rod had a lightning quick recovery . I then tried a 9/10 AFS Hover - full head .
I thought it went slightly better .

I fished the next day with a MacKenzie 9/10 floter with intermediate tip at 42 grams. I then tried the MacKenzie full intermediate 9/10 at 42g and I was casting into my mates water across the other side for a laugh .

I finished off with a short head spey line - a Michael Evans 9/10 Arrowhead - again it flew out with very little effort - With more and more underhand this little rod certainly showed itself to be the perfect fishing tool for our 9/10 heads we commonly use in the UK . I havent tried it but I imagine that it will be able to handle a 10/11 AFS 42gram no problem if you prefer a lazier days fishing . I am deciding just now what will be my next rod from Mr Meiser ;).
I quite fancy the 15 ft 8/9 ......................

Hey fellas.

Great thread.
I was/am a Meiser fan as well.
The blanks are from CTS but rolled to Bob's specs. He has quite a few different people through the years help develop his tapers.

In regards to rods not listed like the 14' 8/9 MKS, ask him. He builds rods and lengths you want if he can.

Only reason I sold my Meisers and Burkheimers is I fell in love with the Bruce and Walker rods!
I went to a gathering put on by a local shop and ended spending all day casting the B&W rods.

Only gripe I have with B&W's is I wish they were more affordable here in Canada.

Meisers are fun to fish and cast though. Fishing for winter steelhead in Canada which a few and far between, it's great enjoying casting and admiring the rod in had between fish.

Enjoy your rods Doon. They are very good fishing and casting rods IMO.
