Hey everyone,

I've been delving into the world of trout fishing lately, and I stumbled upon an intriguing question about trout teeth.

I've noticed that trout have some small but noticeable teeth, which got me wondering: What's the purpose of these teeth?

Do they play a role in their feeding habits, or are they more for defensive purposes?

I'd love to hear from experienced anglers or anyone with insights into trout biology. Understanding their teeth might give us a deeper insight into their behavior and could even improve fishing techniques.

Looking forward to your thoughts!

Seatrout, like Sslmon enter the fresh water system with what we call pin teeth, tiny pin sharp little teeth that although do little harm to us other than scratch to a prawn or sprat they are game over. These are their sea feeding teeth. Those small pin teeth tend to fall out over time in fresh water as they have no need for them. Some fish, often hens retain some blunt versions but they dont retain the same sea feeding teeth they entered fresh water with. Towards the end of the season as hormones kick in they develop spawning teeth, more prevalent in cock fish, which are used for fighting and defence. I have caught coloured cock fish over the years with upper jaw teeth like that of Pike but much more thick set and white. Hen fish don't tend to develop large spawning teeth, i assume their bodies put more effort into developing roe and they bugger off after spawning whereas cock fish stay on and defend/protect the redd.
