The fact that we are members of a Salmon fishing forum says that at the very least we are all interested in fishing, but how much does fishing mean to you.
(1) Is it just a past time, something to do when you are at a loose end.
(2) Is it a hobby where you will spend a fair amount of time and money in pursuit of catching fish.
(3) Is it a bit more than a hobby where you spend more time and money than you should.
(4) Or is it an obsession where you spend far more time and money in the pursuit of catching more or that elusive big fish that you feel can be bettered each time you go fishing.

I would put myself in cat 1 now but when i was a bit younger it would have been somewhere between cat 3 and 4 not money wise but time wise, spend all day fishing for nowt and on the way home planning my next visit to the river.

Definitely obsessive for me. Would fish every day if I could. Realistic between 3 and 4.

Clearly a lot of us - me included - think of ourselves as 3 to 4. I'm not sure exactly where one would draw that line. For me there is nothing else that could replace it.

I suppose it comes down to how much time and money you think you should spend fishing.
Probably soend more time fishing than i should. Not sure that i spend more money on it than i should.
Centainly drive more miles than i should, which obviously adds to the money side.

Priorities and commitments change as you get older as does available cash. When i was younger i probably spent a lot more time than i should but was relatively careful with the money.
I now spend as much time as i used to if not more, but feel less as if its too much.

I was a defo 4 but due to the poor runs around the rivers i fish i am now a 1 or 2. If numbers of fish were there i would return to a 4 but spending upwards of 4K on fishing trips and permits for the odd fish is no longer appealing and there is only so much enjoyment i get from being in the great outdoors when i am targeting salmon. I can and do still spend alot of time in the country but i enjoy it more when i know i have not spent upwards of 100 pounds on permits that day.

4.5 at the moment but that is mainly because I haven't fished for salmon for around 17 years, so a bit of catching up to do. Will settle down to a steady 3.5 within the next 5 years

Probably a 2 this year but a 3 last year. Has something to do with the number of fish caught and how much the wife lets me go fishing. A round of golf takes less time so is generally more acceptable if I first am allowed to escape.

I've probably always been a 3 or 4 until this year, where I've just lost my mojo, if I've fished for more than 6 hrs in total on the 2 occasions I've been I would be lucky.

I've been a 4 then dropped to a 3 and would say also a 2 over periods. I'm currently up at a 3/4 with my annual fishing trip approaching next week. Been quite nice getting enthuiasom back if in honest. Fingers crossed I'm not reduced to a 1 on my return.

banished the tackle tart in me found rods and lines I'm happy with and make me own flees so not much output on the money side,
I have a broad range of interests these days so salmon fishing is enjoyed equally with metal detecting, coaching my son's team and various other bits n bobs

2/3 for me if rangers are playing i get to the game home or away so that’s my first love fishing falls in behind. Football for me fish as often as I can on my time home from offshore July - October minimum 1 day some weeks 2 days a week
