Glad to see another with a nice long wing.

Most that I looked at online had far longer wings than many posted this month. A lot aren't that much longer than a standard hairwing. Being completely new to this style, I thought I had copied something completely wrong. 😊😂
I carry them ranging from this one at 6cm up to 10cm.

Having never owned a piece of actual colobus monkey, can I assume that it also does not compress, similar to goat?
Hi Snapster,

I have a bunch of monkey hair and a bunch of cashmere goat hair. I actually prefer the Goat over the Monkey, I also use some Icelandic Goat hair on my monkey's and sunrays and it has a good action when in the water. I can make up similar flies using the three different hair types and video them. I'll make a thread in 'fly tying topics' and post there.

Hi All,

My entry is a version of Monkey I saw tied by a Finnish chap called Tuomas Yli-Rahnasto - a Phatamonkey (nod to Phatgorva) which i loved the look of especially the orange tail merging to the wing. I always think Monkeys fish better on bottles for sink and draw, so this is 22mm Veniard alu bottle.

Fin Fish Automotive lighting Invertebrate Wing

Tag: Mirage UTC (varnish to stop slipping)
Tail: Fluo orange pulse fibre (Celtic Blob Company) with deep orange artic fox over
Butt: Globrite 4 (varnished to stop fraying)

Body hackle: Fluo orange cock palmered down, then lite gold wire up to secure.

1. Browny orange artic fox - copper angelhair
2. Fiery brown fox - gold angelhair
3. Black Monkeyhair (from a "fur coat" patch) - stretched gold tinsel spurs either side

It's been pretty eye opening to see such great entries so far this month. Well done chaps!
My entry is one of my favorites and in my opinion a quintessential spring version of this very popular fly!

The Black and Chartreuse Monkey.

Artificial fly Insect Writing implement Natural material Terrestrial plant

Tube - 1. 5 inch copper slipstream
Body - Silver mylar tubing
Butt - globrite #4 superglued and varnished
Thread - uni 8/0
Hackle / collar - chartreuse tanuki with the guard hairs stripped....! This is tied in two lengths ( the false hackle being shorter than the section under the black wing.
Wing section - tapered Black fox
Flash 1 - 3 strands of pearl crinkle flash
Wing 2 - tapered Black fox ( slightly longer that the first wing)
Flash 2 - 3 strands of silver micro flash
Top wing - tapered black fox ( longer than wing 2.
Natural bling - nicely shaped Peacock herls ( dyed chartreuse green) again, slightly longer than wing 3.
Cheeks - JC tied long

Overall length is about 5 inches when wet I guess! I'm very lucky to own a tail of black fox long enough to mean I didn't have to dabble with horrible goat, which I absolutely hate 👌🙏!

Good luck everyone 👍
