Just back from my 3 days on the Moy. The water fell very fast so only day 1 was in good condition, low water tactics after that. Managed 1 spinning at the Gub yesterday, lost one on the fly earlier in that day. Looking back I think mid-river would have given better results as I dont think a huge amount of fish ran all the way up to East Mayo waters given the quick fall in water. Id love to try the Foxford fishery but €120 is just too much money to pay especially given the fact that you have to get off the river at 6pm.

I also had 3 days there from Sunday. Got 1 Monday afternoon spinning on Gannons and 2 early Tuesday morning spinning up river. Would have expected a better take given the day and conditions. It was hard work to get them and there didn’t seem to be that many showing given that everyone says the river is ‘stuffed with fish’!
It isn’t that long ago since when you’d see them splashing about even if you didn’t catch them.

"Stuffed with fish".....along with the "bay has miles of fish waiting"......aka.....come and spend your money........
The moy in my opinion is nothing more than a spate river now.....only fishes like a shadow of its past in high water.....
The last cpl of years the fish are what i call "sun burnt"....they run into low warm water from the cool sea and dont take just lay down and sulk as such...sure someone may get a fish or two but you get that on any river....this is supposed to be the premier river in europe....

I'd say 3 fish in 2 days is pretty damn good fishing, but maybe my expectations aren't aligned. Maybe a good day of conditions, and a really good run, and I'd expect more, but maybe I've been sheltered!

Just reading tiernans blog this week and heard the sad news about Kenny Sloan. I never met Kenny but he was a regular poster on here and very helpful keeping many of us updated about the Moy.

His photography of the moy was also very good including this fitting photo of the sun setting on the last day of the season back in 2020.

His photography alone will be sadly missed. RIP Kenny
Totally agree with you there, his photography was stunning. I missed his photos, but, never really gave it a second thought, thinking he had left the forum. It's ironic I was scrolling back through the picture gallery a couple of evenings before the news broke.. Sad news indeed.

Anyone on here know , is it very hard to get membership on east mayo, I live local and would be more inclined to fly fish and catch and release. I also have a good amount of day tickets bought at this stage.

The way the moy is going all the clubs will be only to glad to get new members signed up.....
The East Mayo fishery had a decent year with 1,040 landed of which 448 were released. There were a lot of anglers back following Covid restrictions over the last two seasons but still a healthy number of fish and the best return since 2013 (1,084).

I'm looking for some help please. I'm new to the Moy and am hoping to fish the Ridge and Cathedral pools this June, ideally with fly but will spin if necessary. I know they are influenced by the tides but am not clear as to when within the tide cycle they are fishable. I've seen a comment suggesting only 2hrs either side of high tide? - but then also one suggesting high tide itself is not good - due to slack water? Thanks in advance for any help on this.

Hi, if you can try to wait until July as June gives lots of blank days (even with 10 fishermen). It only fishes well in very low water.

Some tides are smaller and might only have you off the water for an hour or 2 with some bigger tides requiring more time away. I have fished the Cathedral beat one day seeing only 1 fish caught per 8 anglers but the following day I moved up to the weir pool where I hooked 6 fish. The weir pool is just above the ridge and can only be booked 2 days in advance.

Zero fishing when the tide is in. The fish go off the bite ( or at least thats what most seem to say ). The wier pool fishes longer than the other beats as it higher up and is less affected by the rising water.
