Ten Foot Single Handed - best line

Hi all - I managed to get hold of a Mackenzie 10' No 7 line, for fishing Salmon/Sea trout in the summer for medium sized rivers - none of the Mackenzie lines seem to be the right size for the rod - wondering if anyone had any recommendations? (I'd be fishing floating with a small fly)

Thanks

Colin

Great question Colin - thanks for posting (I take it you mean you have a 10ft Mackenzie no 7 rod?).
I am in a similar position; I expect to take delivery of a 10ft 7-8 rod kindly given by a SFF member and was wondering the very same.
I was hoping that someone could recommend an 8 weight multi-tip but not a shooting head. I could then kit out a suitable reel that I have and use the same line with the various tip options; I will be fishing medium and small rivers, mid-Ribble, that sort of size.

I still have it Alec, and haven't forgotten - never fear! When it warms up a bit we can have a cast and see how you get on with it. :)

Hi Colin, it should be fairly straightforward, unless I've missed something. A 7 or 8 weight, Weight Forward, Trout line should do the trick. I would probably go for a Cortland 444. Rio probably make several options.

Unless you had something more fancy in mind, like Switch lines, multi-tips, or something else, in which case I'm no help.

Barrio lines are excellent and great value for money.
Not sure of the spec of the Mackenzie rod but the Royal Wulff Ambush floating line is hard to beat.

Yes, forgot about them. I'd go for a Barrio instead of a Cortland.
Thanks !

Thanks for the responses - great answer - I do have a Barrio No 7 so I'll use that!

The reason for the question was that I have the Mackenzie GTX 13' and matched it with a Mackenzie shooting head and (even with my rubbish casting) the line just flies out, so really just checking to make sure.

Don't think I need a S/H with a single handed rod though - different kind of fishing...
Rio i-line . The heaviest size . You will not regret it .

These are the best but try and find a 15 or 17

A further question

Hi all - thanks for the great responses - food for thought !

Before I go and blow some hard earned cash I just wondered how different (better) the iline and Ambush are from the Barrio SLX (size 7) which does seem to serve a similar purpose - designed for Single handed rods, enabling spey casts and roll casts as well as overhead, here is a description and review...

Barrio SLX Fly Lines

Thanks Colin
I had this rod and fished with it lots and tried a few lines- I found the Rio Gold 8wt line the best for it!

Then if you are looking for sinkers- airflow 40+ expert 8wts
I use a Scandi Short Versitip #4 on my 10ft #7 Loop GA. It's excellent for overhead and all types of spey casts plus you have the versatility of the tips. By far the best line I have used for single handed spey casting.
