I've made myself some of my favourite deadly sunrays.
Im getting better. The heads still need improving but are getting better.
Im real happy with the shape and size though.
Ive coated the bodies and heads in uv resin. Mainly to toughen them up.

Time you gave up the day job and stuck to making rods and tying flies.

I will hopefully be in a position soon to wind down knocking my pan in and concentrate on my rods.
Spending my days either fishing, building rods and tying flies is my dream.
My next load of sample blanks are on their way. Been stuck in Germany for 2 weeks.
According to UPS there's an emergency in London delaying them from being put on a plane?

Whats your line set up when fishing sunrays , do you retrieve or let it swing , Ive seen them tied on slipstream aluminum

My sunrays are plastic. I fish them with a 1.5 per sec tip so they are just below the surface but not breaking the surface.
I cast square and strip it back long fairly fast strips.
I constantly move down stream whilst stripping only stopping to cast. As soon as the fly hits the water I start stripping and moving down with my line.
Very exciting takes.
I also use a big long shank double hooks which extends the hook further back. I find this helps convert takes into hook ups.
Although you will still turn fish without them hooking up and occasionally loose them like I did yesterday.

There was a Geordie and the Ghillie watching me rip down the pools and they both commented on how they have never seen someone Wade down the river without a wading stick constantly moving and only stopping to cast like that.
They asked if I fall in a lot. I told them I will occasionally take a seat and have to put my hand down and get a wet arm but that's it.

Out at dalmarnock on Saturday and thinking about taking spinning rod and switch rod , try with the savage gear line through sandeel seekers and gonna have a bash with a Gordon's Sunray lookalike from sportfish depending on the pools.any info what it's like for wading and anything else that could come in handy I'm all ears 😁

I wouldn't use the sand eel lures on the river Davie. Keep them for the sea trout on the estuary.
Use a vision 110 kinkuru or copy instead for spinning.

Also a switch rod isn't the best tool for Dalmarnock.
The rivers pretty big there with some wide pools you will struggle to cover with a switch rod.
A 13ft or bigger 2 hander is a better option mate.
Crack on with the sunrays though. Always worth a go on any river anytime of the year.

What is the length of the tubes and overall lengths of the flies please.

Tubes are about 2” long and overall length of wing is about 5”
