The 2023 regulations are now out and the good news is that after a long campaign we are opening on 17 March rather than 1 April as in recent years.
Congratulations to all those who wrote letters and lobbied unsuccessfully for change at the time of setting the 2022 season - all the hard work has now paid off.
The other interesting thing is the wording of the bye-law has been tweaked and the new season of 17 March to 31 August applies to brown trout as well as salmon and seatrout. This will stop early trout fishers targeting salmon.
One other piece of good news is the successful prosecution of two individuals caught fishing before the season opened, using illegal gear and obstructing fishery officers. The one who pleaded guilty got a €400 fine and the second who contested the charges was fined €1,500 plus costs. IFI is to be congratulated on this - we just need to see more successful prosecutions taken especially targeting well-known serial offenders.

That is good news. I think an earlier finish for the season is good for the fish too. It seems decades now since any fresh fish have been seen on the Blackwater past early july.

on a seperate note, i see the ords for the bag limit on sea trout and c&r only on the Suir, are they new ?

Just read on the inland fisheries Ireland that the river is opening on the 1st of April is it not the 17th of march or has it changed
That is out of date - it relates to 2022. The river is definitely open on the 17th of March this year.
The river is beautifully clean but is nearing April levels with the lack of rain. The SRT gauge is well below the 12" level. The upstream beats will be in dire need of rain if the blocking high stays in place for another week or two.

Was well fishable upriver, high but not too dirty. Lots of trout to the monkey but no salmon. Had a really good trout pull six times without hooking.
How do you know it was a trout?
Early Season most of the takes are gentle plucks!

1 fish lost in enniscorthy today
Very interesting as normally they don't do well in high water - wonder was it below the bridge.
The high water is not helping and it looks like tomorrow may be another washout. I know of 2 other fish lost and 1 kelt landed. Let's hope once the water settles we start to see a few fish.

All this water should help maintain the levels in April when the spring run proper should start. We haven't been lucky in that regard for the last couple of years. Hopefully when levels settle in the next week there should be some fish about. If we have water in May, that would be even better.
