I am considering tying quite a lot of loch flies for salmon on these hooks, following particularly some DB Muddler patterns illustrated recently in T & S. Both these hooks seem accommodating enough for the job and it would be uncharitable to suggest that Partridge brought out the two versions simply to exploit the feverish insecurities of its customers (I mean, the very suggestion tsk tsk!). I realise there are slight distinctions in appearance but is there any real difference in quality?

Are salars not discontinued and replaced by the patriots so if you are looking for any quanity you will be forced down the patriot route?
Yes Salars were discontinued ages ago and replaced by Patriots. There are still the odd ones knocking around on the likes of Ebay.
I'm sure the Irish lads can give you good info on the best singles.

Salar hooks were discontinued when the gentleman who designed them, none other than Mr. Frodin demanded silly royalties for every pack sold. He was of course perfectly entitled to do this as the brand was his. The manufacturers however seemed to think he was having what our cousins from South of the Watford Gap call a 'tin bath and brought out Patriots to replace Salar's.

The Salar hooks were a finer and lighter 'wire' hook than the Patriot available today. Perhaps for muddlers, a Partridge Low Water hook for example, might help a muddler stay higher in the water?

The Partridge Bomber hook designed by Hans Van Klinken is very fine wire and is intended for floating fly patterns. They are of course a completely different profile to the Salar's but in the words of my old granny, beggars can't be choosers. She used to say that as she beat me up with a length of rubber hose. Oh, she was a one she was :batty:
