I'm hoping to see a spate by the early part of next week. Looks like we are going to see a few days of snow and rain in the catchment which will give it a good clear out. Makes up for the stupidly dry period we've had in Jan/Feb. Hopefully gonna clear some of the cuttings we've still got sitting by the bank on our waters at Ross and bring some fish up the River.
I know they'll not want that down the River but I've not felt that optimistic over the first few days of the season that we've got many fish in our waters. at all.

I see many farmers are going hell for leather spreading chicken sh1t on their fields which this time next week will be in Bristol Channel! I'll say no more.
It’s ok we will take the chicken **** and your wood cutting debris , just a point why don’t you just get it up on the bank and burn it

Because that is against the terms of our lease. Generally it is thin whips off willows about the thickness of your finger.

I was encouraged by the opening day catches , we lost a beauty on Saturday after being on for 10 mins , a 25lb fish at Wyesham on Monday added to the encouragement, the fact we had a seal in Upper Bigsweir on Sunday proved that fish are coming into the system for it to have followed them up river , early days ordinarily we are watching a chocolate flood in March

You've got to be in it to win it.
How long's a piece of string.
etc etc
There is no correct answer. I have caught Wye fish when conditions have been awful and I have blanked when they have been great.
If a springer is there there is always a chance if you get down to where it is.

I've got a lower beat booked for Friday, looking a bit tenuous regarding snow becoming liquid! I am right to think it's best to cancel?

Thanks in advance
Ralph
I have fishing planned for the weekend, looking at the gauges nothing happening , if it falls as snow it will trickle in , if it’s through WUF has the beat got a wash off policy

It's a fine line that we are walking. The spate is held in the snow on the Welsh hills and so although the middle/lower river is slowly rising the rise will really accelerate on late Sunday and Monday as the temperatures go from 4 deg C to 11 or 12 deg C on Sunday/Monday. I predict the real spate will start down the River on Monday. So this weekends fishing will be OK for us down the bottom half of the catchment, but it will be bloody cold.
However it think there is a good chance the last day of the coarse season may well be a write off with a spate of the oxtail soup variety.

At Ross AC just seven days ago at the start of the season we had a River level so low it was off the bottom of our Club gauge.
Oh so different now with the Wye roaring through and out of its banks. It measured 3.5 metres at 8am and is still rising now and will probably peak at just short of 4 metres tonight.

It's going to be probably a week before we can start fishing again especially with the amount of rain in the forecast. On the upside we may have lost an annoying tree stump stuck in one of our pools which we have been trying to lose for some time
