From the Job description....

The key purpose of the role is to ensure that WUF retains its efficacy in efforts to restore the Wye and Usk as we expand and pivot our focus of operations in response to increasing knowledge and new opportunities.

According to the NRW and the EA we (those that put in the hours week in week out) are uncredited oiks who have no idea what we are doing whereas the Guardians of the River the NRW and the EA and their servile lackys at WUF have all the accreditation in the world and know better how to drag feet and ignore the ****ing obvious.
Well said. It is a wider trend in the UK where unless you are paid to do something you can’t be any good at it. Volunteers are not valued. The EA even tried to argue that professor in Oxfordshire didn’t know what he was talking about on storm overflows because he was retired.
That said I see WUF are advertising for volunteers.

It can't be opening yet Steve the river is not in flood.

Fingers crossed for all of us poor souls as we once again do battle.
Not in flood but we are going to freeze our bits off! 🥶🥶🥶
Tightline everybody...

Wyesham will have a great chance with the amount of rods , Ed the magnet Brown is on Bigsweir so there’s a chance he will entice one if they are there
Let's hope they report the catches this season, both have been very tight lipped the last couple of seasons.
Not sure why

There have only 4 fish reported from the Hampshire Avon and none that I know of from the Severn since 1st February, although the Diglis fishery are known for being tight lipped. So don’t hold your breath for the Wye. What did last week’s high tides bring in and where are they? Cold low water is not ideal for encouraging a run of fish.

There will no doubt be an army out on the banks from the lowest reaches to perhaps as far as the middle reaches above Hereford, yes me included, and we will all be hoping then waiting to see what/ if any fish are reported in the next 48 hours and beyond. My thoughts are that catches will be limited to a few lucky individuals until we have warmth and water.

One thought is that nature has a way of balancing things out. A dry February is unusual so what is the chance of a wetter than normal summer? Well, we can all hope, and I have been on this river long enough to remember the summer of 1988, the year of the grilse.

Something that puzzles me this , George Woodward hailed by many as the top man refuses to publish his catches at either Lydbrook or Cadora and nothing is said , Wyesham do publish periodically as do Bigsweir yet they get hammered for holding back information, they do have the threat of poaching both being very close to the road with easy access after dark maybe it’s as simple as why flag up there are fish on their beats and they don’t want nocturnal visitors

Fished upstream of Monmouth on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Usual opening day tradition for me. Sat on the bank to watch the river at first light for a couple of hours on the dawn of a new season with a coffee, slightly miffed that I'd forgotten the bottle of port but hey ho. Couple of swirls in the pool I was overlooking and one bow wave across. Chances are they were pike or chub on the fry as they seem to be prevalent on this stretch.
Worked down the runs with the fly on all three days till dusk near the top water working deeper with all sorts of flies but nothing doing. Felt a pull at one point on the dangle, lifted, felt weight, it pulled then off....a fish (no idea what) may well have taken the tail of the 4" sunray. We shall never know.
Still felt great to be up and about again with my new Loomis NRX+ and Tital. But by Christ it was cold in the water. Measured at 7C so definitely not for the faint hearted let alone 1.5hrs waist wading.
Fingers crossed for some rain and decent tides to bring them on.
Tight lines all and hopefully not too long before more reports start coming in.

I'm hoping to see a spate by the early part of next week. Looks like we are going to see a few days of snow and rain in the catchment which will give it a good clear out. Makes up for the stupidly dry period we've had in Jan/Feb. Hopefully gonna clear some of the cuttings we've still got sitting by the bank on our waters at Ross and bring some fish up the River.
I know they'll not want that down the River but I've not felt that optimistic over the first few days of the season that we've got many fish in our waters. at all.

I see many farmers are going hell for leather spreading chicken sh1t on their fields which this time next week will be in Bristol Channel! I'll say no more.
