For me it is that idea that you 'can' catch a 30lber in the Wye anywhere from Hereford downstream, maybe a bit above depending on water, in spring (March/ April), it will be a bar of silver, and as people say its a reasonable drive of around 90 mins.

At Bigsweir you can fish from April through to the end of the season and be almost certain that there are fish in the pools, its just up to you to catch them ;)

Absobloodylutely Peter as recently as 2019 one of our members at Ross AC had a fish of 30.5lbs amongst the 9 we had that year with another at 23lb. So always a chance of a monster but essential to be on the bank at the right time.

I am new to salmon fishing, and trying to work out where to fish at what time. The little I have read about the wye is very interesting, I like the idea of being in with the chance of catching a big fish.
You're in with a very, very, tiny chance of catching a big fish and your chance of catching anything is small. But it is at least a chance. That's what we've got these days.

You should join the Wye Salmon Association for the total annual cost of a tenner; yes just £10 for a year! It will give you FREE fishing on a number of beats under their ‘get more rods on the river’ scheme and you also get a free booklet about how and where to fish for Wye salmon.

I live in the Midlands. It's hard to know where to fish, I haven't got alot of spare time, so I need to make the best use of the time I have. I'm unsure if the wye is a good option? But I do have an urge to fish it, along with the tyne, they are both similar distances away from me

I spent a couple of hours on the bank today clearing some scrub in preparation for the coming season. The river looked in fine fettle and at the ideal height for Ross AC although I didn’t see any fish. I wish we had the old opening date of 26th January. Doesn’t make sense when the Wye’s sister river, the Severn, has been open since 1st February.

The Tyne is overall a better bet for a fish if you can get on the right beats. However for a proper big springer then the Wye wins hands down. The chances are very slim but if you do hook one then it is a very good chance that it will be high teens or over the magic 20+ (sometimes well over)

I happened to be awake early this morning and caught a piece on Radio 4's Farming Today about stricter control of waste from poultry units in the Wye catchment. There's a degree of 'jam tomorrow' about it, in that it won't be implemented until 2025, but perhaps reason for a small amount of optimism, and at least it shows an acknowledgement of the problem from the producers' end. Interesting, too, to hear that the US parent company are paying reparations to communities for previous damage caused by poultry units over there - though I won't hold my breath for anything similar here!

Starts at about 7.10.

I thought fishing was suspended on the Wye and Usk last Summer. Certainly in my club on the Usk it was closed between 11/07 and 7/09. For good reason. So was surprised to see this video from 3rd August right in the middle of that heatwave suspension on Wyesham. Not a good look for angling, salmon looked lifeless when trying to release, one less for the headwaters.

Yes, I also saw that and thought the same thing. Wasn't pleased at all to see the flagrant disregard for what was supposed to be a river-wide fishing ban.
