I saw tha

I'm working all this week, something which is a good thing really - except when fish are being caught!

Incidentally, I read Phil Ellis's FB page and saw that there was at least one taking fish at Swinton last Friday and one of the other rods hooked it after I left, under the guidance of Phil!:ROFLMAO:

If you have the time you could do worse than give him a call. I booked him for my brother last year but my brother was working 7 days through Sep and Oct, so I took the day myself.
I'd never been keen on the idea before living in the US and I'd still prefer to fish alone and find things for myself.

However, I enjoyed the day more than I thought, lots of good information and good company too. I can't justify the cost, given the money I've spent this year on fishing, but I think it is reasonable value considering the fish per trip and how hard he works for the rod.

Obviously this comes from a man whose first Yorkshire fish came courtesy of MCX Guiding Services Inc.

Glad to hear you are getting out MCX and I think you may have a decent chance on Friday. I nearly booked Thoresby as back up last Friday, but was concerned I may waste my money and wash out based on the forecast. In the event, the rain eased up and it would have been a lovely height to fish.

Tight lines
Hi, approx how much is Phil Ellis for the day?

GK, many thanks. I've just come off a telephone conversation with someone whose sons have just caught 3 on Bolton.
That information is doing nothing for my motivation today!

You have PM, not sure if he's changed his rates so I won't put them on here.

River seems to be running a bit of water, and might just do for the foreseable..... should be starting to get plenty of fish in the system...

I've had seven trips to the Ure so far this year, various stretches...no silvers yet, but had some clonking brownies... just waiting for the rains to come now.......i reckon the next good flood there'll be plenty of salmon in the upper reaches......there's some good fly water below kilgram bridge, owned by The Buck Inn fly fishing club....does anyone know anything about this club...looks superb water...

Seems like the rain's here. I'm fishing the Ure this week coming..... should be plenty of fish around now. Looks like a big, big flood for tomorrow so hoping it will be perfect level for tuesday.

There are loads of fish all over the Ure. The problem is that they’re just not interested in a fly. I’ve been working hard on Thoresby but only averaging one per day. That said, the 15 pounder on Thursday was a real treat.

What's the solution - shrimp flies only?
I wish it was that simple! The sample size is too small to draw conclusions but it seems to be the case that if you put the fly right on a salmon's nose when it's having a rare moment of wakefulness, you may get lucky. The pattern doesn't seem to matter, as people have been catching at random intervals with all sorts. The time of day hasn't been consistent; no pattern is observable; and despite the numbers present few if any fish are showing. The salmon are calm, settled and comfortable, and the testosterone level in the cock fish hasn't yet risen to the level at which they get really stupid and lively.

The 15 was in a well-known lie close in to the side which people who don't know the beat disturb by wading too deep. I was using a mini-MCX Dark tungsten conehead fished deep, which probably met the fish close to eye level, gave it a start and prompted an aggressive cock fish response.

The 9 on Saturday was a moving hen fish taking a breather in a short halt lie at the head of a stretch of fast water, which took an MCX Dark #8 on a plain fluorocarbon leader. The Swinnithwaite rods on the opposite bank had 3 in that run on the same day.

In my book the solution is to keep on doing something broadly sensible and wait for the odds to come good. One bit of the jigsaw I've not yet puzzled out is the fall in water temperature over the past 4 weeks: at the start it was 14.7C, unusually warm for the Ure in autumn; after 2 weeks came down to around 12C; and this week fell from 10C (autumn average) to 8.4C, which is distinctly cool for the time of year. However, if this weekend's rain generates a spate of 4 feet or more it might churn things up a bit for the benefit of those fishing next week (tight lines Ashley on Tuesday).

I only want one for this season!!! ha ha . Think I've fished the ure 9 times so far, and had a great time, though no silver tourists yet. I wanted to book a day on Thoresby but it seems it's more popular than ever!! However, I'm confident...

Michael, top marks for a full reply!!

You refer to MCX this and that. Are these your own patterns presumably?

There's just 1 day left available at Thoresby on Weds 21st ... I think I'm going to go for it!

Go for it!

You will find the details of the MCX Family of flies here. Owing to disability I can't tie flies myself and so rely on Peter Nightingale of Classic Flies to produce them to my design, which he does beautifully.

Since 2016, with the exception of 2 trips to Norway when I used Frodin designs, I have fished the MCX in its various forms to the exclusion of all other patterns. I just change the size and type to suit the conditions. It appears that I don't catch any fewer fish than anyone else fishing the same water, and often, more. As a result I'm content and have confidence in the MCX pattern, which is a very important factor. To fish with conviction you've got to believe in what you've got on the far end.

Thank you for the link to your blog ... absolutely captivating, extremely well-written as well as being hugely informative.

The link to Classic Flies has broken unfortunately, as I like your simple approach to fly patterns. I had a big fly audit recently and realise I have far too many that never get wet! I'd like to replace many of them with some of your patterns to clarify my decision making apart from anything else!

I'd also love to read up more about your MCX Score system if you don't mind sharing? One of the things I am not good at is being logical about how to approach each days' fishing. For sure I have 25+ years of experience, but I am primarily a trout fisherman, and salmon, whilst a gathering passion of mine, has always been slightly peripheral. I need to change that and your system would seem to be a good place to start!
