shame

would be a shame if yer were poor with limited tackle then? it's based on if yer seen say casting at a salmon that's say head and tailing and the bailiff sees you.

It's high time that the bylaws were updated, they is many bylaws which need updating like seasons start dates ie Yorkshire April 6th,the worming bylaws, baits of all descriptions, and the kill date needs to be assessed according to each individual river in question.

About the worms

Seems odd how apparently worming is allowed before 16th June, if you maintain you are after sea trout. On the Border Esk you are more likely to catch salmon than sea trout by worming just now. A chap on Tinnings water worms from 1st April, he only mentions the salmon, doesn't seem interested in sea trout. A very odd situation, one that totally undermines the intended purpose of the EA bylaws.

It would be pretty obvious to me if you were worming for Salmon mate

Take it you were due to fish the Park beat....If so can you let me know where all these folk were on the river bank.

Asking for as a member of the Park syndicate, I complained twice about this sort of thing last year, and put forward a number of suggestions to help curb this.

None were taken up, but if it is continuing, and as the general public are supposed to keep to the public footpaths, which on both sides of the river are far away from the river banks, then the estate office should be made aware on each and every occasion it occurs.

This is the only way, we may get something done about putting a stop to such encroachments.

Leven

Is the leven that river that runs along side of the A590 near a hotel before a car museum perhaps,if so is that the same river that runs towards boggle crag wood before the Grizedale visitors centre? if so what a place to be fishing,a true wildlife haven boasting the last woodland red deer left from the last ice age, special deer as the other polulations are all moor deer that have been relocated or wandered from moor into new woodlands.
sizegrh (spelling) castle or zoo perhaps boasts brazilian ardvarks, odd skunks and golden eagles (if they still there)

i was in grizedale a few yrs back and came to a place haventhwaite perhaps near a hotel/inn called eagles head i think anyway they was a small junction in the road and as we ascended up our turning we seen one of the best gardens a fisherman could ever hope for,a stunning cascading water fall in yer back yard,if that is indeed the leven do the fish get past that point?

Yes that's the Leven at Haverthwaite, and yes amazingly fish do get up that big waterfall! The one flowing past Grizdale visitors centre will be a smaller river/beck called Rusland Pool, which flows into the Leven estuary.

?

Is any of that water that runs through the forest area ticket water or is it a close nit set up? ive passed a few rivers under the A590, one looks tidal i think before barrow,er near what looks like a light house on a hill ? very narrow indeed, also i like the look of the most amazing crystal clear water i ever seen just as yer come off the A590 next to a big hotel maybe some boats moored on a bend, thats the route we take into grizedale or did in the past.
Never seen a salmon ro sea trout in there yet, saying that it is nearly always winter time when we have been there and always late at night.i have a few mates in barrow area but they have no idea of salmon fishing, bass yes salmon no.
wow as for the fish going over that fall near the junction on the road, last time i was there a few yrs back they had been a storm and they was logs al over the road for a few hundred yrds and what a area for seeing red Deer (cervus elephus) {spelling}.do any salmon make it into any of the lakes around that peninsular area?

Thanks for the info, I will certainly relay this to the estate office....From what you say these goings on would be pretty much in view of Levens Hall, and if so , it is just not on!!!

I have heard that a fair number of sea trout have been taken on the KAA stretch, but haven't heard much on the salmon front.

Well the rain didn't do a lot, as come Wednesday morning the Sedgwick gauge was only on the .55m mark and was hoping to see it nearer .90m.

Nevertheless I gave it a go, arriving at about 9 am, fishing through till 4pm, and with it clearing all the time fished the fly for much of the day.

Saw just two salmon and a few herling, but never had a touch except for 1 small herling, but there was a Grilse taken on the worm by a rod fishing the bottom end of the beat in Walkers Hole.

Was going to have a go myself this morning as the Sedgwick gauge was at 61cm this morning and falling, but something else cropped up and I couldn't get away.

Fished the Park a couple of times last week in what used to be considered ideal river heights and conditions, but never even saw any signs of any salmon.

Fished the Top Stream, Raven Cragg and the Kettle one day, then the following day, fished the bottom end in Walkers Hole, Slaughterhouse, and Swing Bridge.

Fished the fly both days, but on day 2 also spun through each of the pools after.

Had a total of just 3 small Herling, 1 sea trout of around 1.5lb and a nice Brownie, which must have topped 2lb, but of salmon not a sign.

Fish fell to either a Posh Tosh or Wilkinson Flamethrower

What beat were you and your mate on when you caught?

No, I fish the Park, but over this past 4 or 5 years the Waste seems to have been be more productive than the Park, at least as far as Salmon are concerned

Looks like we are going to get some more rain, so hopefully I will be able to give it another go, maybe Monday and Tuesday of next week.

I heard that there were four or five salmon taken at Watercrook last Wednesday, so there are definitely fish running through, though why they seem disinclined to hold up in the Park these days, I have no idea.....Will keep trying though.

Did you and your mate take the two Grilse mentioned from the Waste?

Good to hear that...Youv'e raised my spirits a bit, so If we get the rain that is forecast today, will definitely give it a go tomorrow and probably Tuesday as well.

Have been fishing the top end in recent visits, sticking in the main to the Top Run, the Kettle & Pheasant Hide, although the Kettle is now getting impossible to fish properly, due to most of the branches on the far bank trees, overhanging and now almost touching the water.

Have stuck in the main to fishing the fly, and in truth have hardly seen any signs of salmon, so will probably give the bottom end a go this week.

wheres the park?
Its the stretch of the Kent within the actual grounds of Levens Deer Park, starting immediately downstream of the deer fence, at the top end of the Park, and extending downstream to just below the Car Park within the grounds of Levens Hall itself.

It is double bank fishing save for the last 100yds or so at the downstream end, where fishing is from the left hand bank only.

I fished the Park last Monday and by around 1pm, conditions were, what was in the past regarded as being spot on.

Fished Swing Bridge, Turn Hole, and Walkers Hole, but apart from a single Sea Trout of about 1.25lb on a "Posh Tosh" and a few follows whilst Spinning with a Flying C earlier in the day, I never had any other offers, and saw no signs whatsoever of any Salmon.

Fished the Top Run, and Pheasant Hide from early the following morning up until around 1pm, in what I would have described as still being a good water, but again saw no signs of any salmon, and had no offers at all.

On a brighter note, Walkers Hole, which had become almost impossible to fish effectively because of the branches of the tree lined opposite bank overhanging the water, has now been cut back to leave the branches at a sensible height, and is now fishable again almost throughout its entire length.:)

Just spent 20 mins or so at Stramongate view and seen 10-12 grilse taking the weir so a bit of positive news.
Saw a few fish showing on Saturday afternoon at Force Falls - I had fished the bottom end of Levens Park in the morning, but saw nothing. Later in the afternoon whilst fishing the top end of the Park (Top Stream) there was quite a large coloured fish splashing around and plenty of good brownies about too.
