Broader context and future plans
- Eradication plan: The treatment of the four infected rivers in the Driva region was conducted according to an eradication plan.
- Previous success: A similar rotenone treatment in the Vikja river was successful in exterminating G. salaris by killing the fish population and the parasite. Eggs of Atlantic salmon and brown trout survived the treatment, and the salmon population later recovered.
- Continued research: Efforts continue to find solutions to challenges identified in other Norwegian regions, such as the Drammen region, where research is being conducted to find good solutions before any chemical treatment can occur.
- Breeding for resistance: Researchers are also investigating the possibility of using targeted selective breeding to increase salmon resistance to the parasite, particularly in rivers where chemical eradication is not possible.
