Was just away to post this :( Alan posted on their Facebook account to say. Very, very sad news.

Just as he retired and was away to enjoy it and all. Have 5 of his rods that I built sitting in my rod room. Will have to get myself out for a cast with them when I next get a chance.

Just heard that tonight too. I had phoned him last Saturday with the intention of popping in for a blether, as I was not far from his new house near Hawick. Did not get a reply, so I assume he has not been well. I do know he had not been keeping well and was waiting on a diagnosis last time we spoke.
Very sad, he was certainly one of life’s characters and he definitely knew his stuff when it came to rods. He enjoyed his shooting too but he did say he was struggling a bit last season.

That is sad news. He worked hard to build that rod company up from nothing. I remember when he used to sell them cheap in return for online reviews. A shame that he can’t enjoy a retirement. Life is too short for us. RIP Mick.

The trouble with all the lockdowns is something I think of as happening last year was actually 4 years ago and that was when I last saw Mick. We had a long chat at his place in Selkirk while I collected a new rod he had made for me. We fished together a lot over the years.
I was surprised when he sold the business, did he know something?
Anyway I am otherwise lost for words.

I can still see him waltzing around to classical music at top volume in the kitchen in L.B.& I. lodge with the never ending glass of white wine in his hand. From morning to night he was always up to something. Quite accomplished on the guitar and tinkling the ivories, he loved a good song. Anna would just roll her eyes.:D
Deeply eccentric, huge, huge character and above all, a lovely man who didn't hesitate to call a spade a spade.
He'll be missed-------greatly.

Just heard from Micks wife Anna, that he was actually diagnosed with MND. He had told me that he had a private consultation with a doctor, who suspected it might be MND and was then waiting for an appointment with a neurologist.
A terrible disease that you would not wish on anyone. But for someone like Mike who lived life to the fullest, it must have been devastating. Sadly, Mick got weaker and weaker and could barely speak laterally. It’s just a blessing he did not suffer for too long.
I feel privileged have known him and regarded him as a friend.

It's a horrible, horrible, disease.
I had a close friend that we buried a couple of months ago.
Fittest laddie I ever walked the hills with, he ran Munroes, climbed sea stacks, the Rannoch Wall for fun. He completed the Fisherfield Forest when I was with him one day and wondered if he should do An Teallach as well. He did that next day out from Sheneval. A machine.
Struck down 4 years ago to a shell at 52.
Devastating.

Sad News, I spoke with Mick Bell on the phone some nights when I first got into Salmon fishing, he was charming, hilarious and knew his onions! I met him fishing on The Tay a few times too. Used to love his stories of working in the city and drinking a Bottle of Krug every night of the week.

Hi Everyone, I'm Alan, I bought Bloke Fly Rods from Mick last year, though he still kept an interest in the business and I frequented his door with more than enough questions.

It was absolutely devastating news to hear from Anna when she called to tell me. I last spoke with Mick around 5 weeks ago and although he was struggling a bit he was full of spirit, sadly I didn't get up to see him again, but I didn't want to intrude on what was a terrible time for him, but I kept in touch via email and text as he deteriorated. Anna told me he was in the hospital the weekend before he passed away and I was looking forward to him being repaired and back out so I could visit, never thought it would end this way.

It's still not sunk in that he's gone, another very good friend taken way too early and it really couldn't be more heartbreaking knowing that he was at the point where he'd made it, he was where he wanted to be in life.

It fills me with happiness to know that he touched so many people, looking through this thread and the other on the fly fishing forum as well as comments on my posts on facebook.
