Well 2022 was a bit of a dissapointment.
The start of the season was hardwork due to the 2 massive storms filling the river with trees.
There was plenty fish in the river early on but not easy getting to them.
Then from April onwards we never had any more rain.
The water was as low as i saw it in 1976.
There were plenty fish arriving at the loups right throughout the summer until mid August.
Nearly all salmon with some grilse.
Though nobody was catching anything in the warm water temps.
Seatrout runs seem to be increasing every year since the final nets have been taken off.
Didnt see any monsters this year, unlike last year.
Water was too high throughout November to see any spawning.
We did have a massive flood mid November that was only a 3 feet lower than storm Frank at the loups and record height bellow the westwater and luther.
Hopefully not too much damage to the reds.

Water looks good today.
It wouldnt surprise me if the odd springer was already sneaking in.
Lets hope theres more water in 2023.

The last 2 pics show how hight the river was.
Probably about 25 feet.

had a walk along the river today to see what state the disease was.
I counted 38 dead or diseased fish.
72 similar time same walk last year so a bit better.
The fish are lying in different spots to usual and mainly in very shallow water.
A fair percentage are in dead shallow water when only a few tiny spots.

Has the river been higher than last year Alan which could have let more get over the falls or do you think that as a percentage it is a genuine improvement. Hard to judge I know but I suspect that your knowledge of the river and ‘developed’ intuition won’t be far off.

Not sure Iain.
There seemed to be no red belly in the early fish i saw and red belly has been a big factor the last few years.
The water has also been better.
Fish definitely went over the Loups earlier this year.
Its meant to be a cold water disease, but much as Feb was mild, its been cold since then.
Im hoping it a good year, but theres a chance its just late.
Much as catches imply theres no new fish, theres plenty fresh fish going through.
Last year and this year there has been an exceptional number of East wind days and clouds on the hills which tends to mean crap catches.

Ten weeks of easterlies hasn't helped anything. Strange how this effects all kind of fishing. In the olden days the local fishing fleet from the east neuk called it a poverty wind, as you didn't catch much even offshore.

Doesn’t matter what fishing you do an east wind always ruins it.

Thats good to know, and lets hope so as its such a sad thing to happen.

Heartbreaking isn’t it as it always seems to be a May/June thing. Twice I reported it on the Lyn in Devon causing the closure of the river. I just presumed it was UDN but the answer was something else that causes any fish getting knocked coming out in this i was told🤔

North/South/West haven't been much kinder to you this year 🤣😉

The ghilly on the Tweed used to say 2 weeks of 50 degrees + used to see the fish come on the take and things improve, other wise it would run through a pool like wild fire.

It’s also an invisible thing imo as I’ve seen large spring salmon as fresh as paint handled while under anaesthetic with gloves and belly up the day after
Anyone heard or seen anything about a major slurry leak on the North Esk?
Just had notification from fishpal that may week in June maybe cancelled
Hope not at would be a shame for the river and a lot o lads

Yes I’m on Pert today and got a look at the Luther pool last night - the water was black. A silo containing effluent has burst, it was coming down the Black Burn and into the main river just above the Luther - total nightmare and terrible for the river.

Just about to chuck it and head down the road.

An awful situation. Received a call from our ghillie this morning . My week (next week) cancelled due to the condition of the river . He’s already acknowledged fish deaths . As already stated the situation this year was flashing red without this .

Bad news boys, slurry pouring in from the black burn, 80 yards above Luther mouth😡
That will be the whole river f****d above and below the black burn thats all we need, I hope there is a massive fine for whoever is responsible for this disaster.
