River in fine condition, clear and a good height
Many thanks Graham, roughly how far down the river is that ?
Tight lines Graham, i''ll be below you, lets hope somebody has something to report...Bistern down, not been further up the river but would think it will be the same. I’m on the lower beat at Bistern tomorrow. Let’s hope we get some fresh fish moving up.
Interesting, so it wasn't in the river for long. As CPM's late father said, passed through the Royalty, Lower Winkton and the Upper Winkton weirs swiftly aided by high water. I guess is it did not hang for much longer there either.Yes, one lice near the tail. It's the first "proper" Avon springer that I had caught and I was taken aback at the shape of it. I'm used to the profile of Scottish salmon and grilse from the Avon, but this fish was built like a tank! It was almost round in profile, with huge shoulders. Can't wait to hook another one...
Thanks Sean, all quiet above you as well, river looking good, nice flow and clarity, we just need to keep fishing!Fished the Royalty today, but nothing to report. Some good tides this week, so hopefully they may bring a few into the system.
Lost my first ever salmon at a school friends farm Fordingbridge 57 years ago, ran out of line.!!😳Does anyone know if salmon are ever seen or caught around Fordingbridge/Burgate? Apparently Salisbury District AC has some access up there.
Did you see the monster that it no doubt was?!Lost my first ever salmon at a school friends farm Fordingbridge 57 years ago, ran out of line.!!😳
I was a boy out for a days fishing with a mepps, anything would do, pike, chub, trout, the rod solid fiberglass 7ft long with very bacis reel with about 50yard of 12lb line, anyway saw the a fish breach the surface up above me, thought why not, banged out the mepps, fish took first cast, then decided to run down stream, I walked down the river until I could go no further, just watched the line pealing of the reel, cranked up the tension as far as I felt safe, sadly watch the line go right down to the knot, I would have put it at 20 lbs +. Then proceeded to loose the next fishing Goodrich on the Wye, that one just fell off probably because I was playing it like a pansy not wanting to loose the fish like the the first, also above 20lb according to the 3 guys waiting to land the fish, one with a gaff, one with a trailer and the other with a net. Fortunately, roll on 10 years and the next one stuck on.Did you see the monster that it no doubt was?!

It was like that in the 60’s fishing in the spring, the friend that took me to the Wye had a photo on his desk with 3 fish caught the same day, smallest 22lb the biggest just under 30lb. You have to go to Norway to see fish like that now, and they are disappearing quickly.Pretty good going if the first 2 salmon you hooked were 20 lbs + !
Albeit on 2 of the rivers in the UK which gave you the best chance of that happening.
I had a great start in the eighties, first fish 21lbs then a week later a 27 lb.
