Diarmid, seen quite a lot of mackenzie rods/gear heavily discounted, including the FX1 rod.

Ha ha too late pal, I got one new from Sportfish for a price I couldn't refuse:cool:.
As you know I like Scott's DTX and G2 rods so fingers crossed this will be good.

It will be a good rod like all his other ones have been - The guy has never really put his name to any bad gear at all . Even back to his Daiwa Scott McKenzie Signature rods which were and still are fantastic salmon fishing rods . I wish I had kept mine really especially the 14ft'r . Anyway I am sure that this wee 13ft 8 weight FX1 will throw any 38 gram shooting head as far as you want it to .

I had the Daiwa Scott Mackenzie Signature 13ft and 14ft both were fantastic rods as you say. The 13ft 9wt threw about 36g really nicely and the 14ft loved the 9/10 AFS. The only complaint I had was that they were 3 pieces.
I also had some of the DTX range and still have the 12ft DTX Spey which is a wee cracker.
Roll on the start of the season:).

3 Piece rods were the best though really for casting and playing fish - If the modern materials were incorporated into 3 piece actions we would find ourselves in a slightly better place . Small car boots and travel put before rod actions mostly .
Same with single handers where you will find not alot in length more than 10ft . Such a shame that the 10ft 6" and 11ft 3" were done away with . Spoke at great length with Brian Potter at B&W regarding this phase .Anyway we are where we are .

Would disagree with this there are a lot of very good travel rod actions out there now, Mackenzie, guideline and Salmologic to name but a few, the actions are soft enough to play fish on light tippets but are designed to have good casting abilities as well.

Not disputing that they will be good but as there are no 3 piece versions of them you'll never know how better they could have been .......
I can only go with my own experience of rods and from what I have spoken about at great length to the likes of Brian at B&W ....and another well know custom rod maker . The market doesnt support their own preference towards 3 piece rods - Given the chance then they possibly would . Anyway here we are . 4 piece as standard to suit men with womens cars - travel market also being catered for for folk too tight to spend on a sport tube and a bit of carriage . Same old story of salmon fishing trying to evolve itsself every few years . We will have 8 piece rods next for travel with smaller bags and 25D shooting heads to cast on them .....
Incidentally- Nearly all of mine are 4 piece now but I still have a couple of cracking 3 piece rods which I dont think will ever be beaten for action and proper fishing ability . I also have a stash of Daiwa Whisker Kevlar 11ft 3" 4-7's - another magic length and style of rod forced out of production mainly by catering to stocky bashers .

I started with an 11' 3" CF98. I caught trout and grayling, pollack and bass as well as salmon and sea trout. Fantastic rods to play a fish on and for traditional Loch style fishing.

Sorry...Diarmids beaten you to it. Sportfish and Farlows had about £350 off the FX1 rods....all out of stock now according to their websites.

Cheers. It wasn't for me buying one - I have an FX1 too, so am interested in how the 2nd hand price is holding up.

Same model as mine (14ft #9) went for £600 this week on here. If the price is dropping I may well just keep mine as it's a belting rod.

The Shakey I got as a "spare" at the same line wt cost me peanuts so I can still use that when fishing on dodgy urban beats or where difficult access climbing banks etc (eg PAAS beats) puts the rod at more risk!

Sportfish were selling them for £599.
If someone sold a used one for £600 then they got lucky. Not so lucky for the buyer though:rolleyes:.

I see Mackenzie still have them as part of the new rod line-up together with the new 6pc travel version (Atlas).
All are still list price direct from Mackenzie ( Didn't see them on sale but the 13ft is the cheapest at £959 then the 14ft is £975 and 15ft £999 List)

It will remain to be seen if in fact the "lucky" guys were those who got a one-off stock clearance from the dealers during the Xmas sales!!
