Grassy_Knollington mentioned on another thread about some of his early flies.

It got me thinking of a Cascade that I like to keep to remind me of how I used to tie. This wasn't tied that long ago either and shows that anyone can improve. I got fish on this fly too which shows that salmon really are not fussy. Thankfully!

Anyone else brave enough to add to this thread with their early tyings?

I should be able to dig out a few more. ;)

I have kept a lot of my first tyings and still have around 150 (mostly on salars) in a box and that's after I've striped about half of them, always good to look back at them and see how overly dressed they were , I do think that my tying has improved a little from when I first started tying but I still think there's still plenty of room for improvement, I've had some really good advice on the open forum and by pm which was and still is greatly appreciated

Caught a fish on this about 6 or 7 years ago:

This is how I wanted it to look from day one:

Most of my boxes are at home so I can't do a show and tell for a while but those flies there aren't too bad compared with mine:eek:

The best ones are those from when I first got the fly tying kit, I reckon that thread was 4/0 and trying to do a hairwing without a big turnip head was impossible!

If you want to see some of those from when I started back again in 2012/13 search for the 'Durham Ranger' shrimp ;););) pelters!

Lamson, I'd fish your 'before' ones and frame the 'afters'

WRT the Park, Ross MacDonald seems to have a particular way of tying his shrimps with those long, sparse front hackles that stand out rather than being swept back, I also like the way his flies look scruffy but not over-dressed. Anyone who can tie one of his flies in a semi-passable impression could nail any modern-style fly.
