Drams for the salmon fishing!!

It is approaching that time again for us when we go whisky drin . . . . . sorry salmon fishing for a week. My week is unfortunately being truncated by my good ladys bloody audacity to be 40 on the Friday so its down the road on the thursday evening for me.
However the drams are being prepared. 22 years we have been going away as chums so normally we buy a bottle of the particular year vinatge as a commemoration. However 22 year olds are pretty steep so its bottles to TOTAL 22 i.e. 2 bottles. . one 10, one 12 to total 22 if you get ma drift!!!!!!!! Being us of course it has to be at least 4 bottles each.

I have taken at the mo the easy option. I am taking a Glenlivet 10, Talisker 12, for my first 22!! and a bottle of Bowmore Tempest 12. My mate from Ayrshire is takingat least 5 of various vintages. Big mate so far is taking 2 bottles of JW Royal Salute and a bottle of Balvenie . . vintage unknown as well as sommit else.

What does one think?? A nice wee apperitif to capture any magical moments. Any whisky connosieurs want to add in a special or nice one that I could take (price reasonable of course). Does any one know of a reasonable 22 year old malt???? Also options please for another 10 year old that I should get to make up my second "22 pack"
BTW I'll try and post a pic if I can be bothered on return to make all you whisky drinkers envious. . . . . . esp you Twwed Dog!!
Regards

Not really, just that during Lent you give up Abstemious Days.
Just a wee heads up. Amazon have 12yo Singleton on offer at the minute for £25.

Perhaps not as exotic or exciting as most of the drams posted on this thread but never a bad one to have in the cabinet. 🙂

So, had an afternoon of fine Cognac ...

Starting to appreciate the differences between the various houses and styles. Deep down, there are many similarities to Whisky - yes, Cognac is from grapes and then wine whereas Whisky is from grain, but then both are distilled with the still size and shape affecting the flavours. Then, barrelled in wood - Cognac in French Oak only, stored and matured.

Some houses have both Dry and Wet warehouses - the dry and higher up and get a lot of heat/sun whereas the wet are towards the ground or under and are damper and cooler. Even with the same starting spirit, the results are massively different.

My two favourites were the A E Dor Napoleon: Tradition Range | AEDOR

And Hardy Noces D'Or Cognac, Hardy, Noces d'Or, Sublime, Prestige, Grande Champagne

I managed a few small tastes of some extremely valuable ones too - £1000/bottle and more.

I would certainly recommend and group that has a week fishing to have a Whisky free day and have a Cognac day instead - obviously with products from small indepepndents rather than the mass market brands.

Thanks for the report Pollowick sounds like you had an amazing experience. I will definitely be trying out a few different ones👍
I am currently looking at what drams to bring to the Spey next week. Got a Glen scotia Victoriana and a Deanston 18 year old to go at👍

Talking with the owner of Hardy - Cognac, and her father was a regular Tay fisher with some good sizes landed. I have a Hardy Cognac flask with a salmon engraving on it - rare and limited in numbers. No connection between the two Hardy families though.
Had these gifted to me recently after the unfortunate passing of a friends father much appreciated and I will slowly work through them

If you you/partner is into making fruit cakes, to me, that is the best use of standard Glenfiddich or Glenlivet, both in the mix and feeding afterwards. You get a decent cake with excellent taste and my wife, who hates whisky, loves them. Cheap grain/blended - does not add anything, and expensive malts are wasted.

The rest will certainly be an excellent memory.
