Find myself watching this round about this time every year.

 

I use mine for trotting for Grayling, very badly usually!

 

I have one. I simply can't get on with it. Fixed spool does me just fine.

It‘s also commonly used in the US and Canada for Steelhead and salmon, mainly in the great lakes area. I tried it once there and it is not that easy as it looks. I bought a reel afterwards and used it a few times here for barbel and grayling, with a float and a heavy nymph below. That worked pretty well.

Its no harder than casting with a multi all about the technique.
Certainly not a long casting tool but certainly good for long trotting.

 

For me, it's the way the rod and reel are held. It is painful for me. Also I don't long trot. Short upstream cast, rod held high, trot until control is lost. Cover the water infront of me, in sections, then move. No wading on redds!

 

Long trotting so theres minimal drag on the float. Mostly ends up in tangles and backlashes.
Much easier with an old abu closed face reel.

 

I was weaned on the centre pin reel, it is the best tool for fishing close to you, it is not going to be a tool for distance fishing. Some folk use the Wallis cast, but you are using the wrong tool in modern times if you want to cast a long way. I have fixed spool and close faced reels for waggler fishing. Standing in a river using a pin is one of the nicest ways to catch a fish, no gears, just direct contact with the float and the fish once hooked.

 

And don't get me started on multipliers 😡

 

I use multipliers for sea fishing on rough ground for Cod in winter, I have even used one harling on the Tay when I caught my first Salmon which turned out to be a well mended kelt.

I bought a daiwa slosh a few years back. Promptly gave it away. I now have a pair of daiwa bg 8000 fixed spools for that purpose.

 

This was shot last winter, using the Slosh for the Codling at a wee harbour just up the coast.
