Broken rods

I think this would be invaluable to have a section here catering for all the good rods that it is impossible to find a replacement section from the makers.

that’s a great idea as there must be rods with sections broken all over the place
There's already such a section on the forum, or at least there used to be!.

I had a go at repairing my old Hardy Swift rod last week, broke it late last season and messaged Hardy for a replacement but they can't supply a replacement.

Finally got round to fixing it last week and it looks the job, but haven't fished with it yet.

Also repaired my friends rod and he fished all weekend with it without any issues, he confident it will hold a fish, but I'll not be 100% confident in the repair until It's landed a fish.

I am really surprised to hear that for I was under the impression that Hardy kept their mandrils and so could make a new section from scratch!
Yeah I was disappointed myself Iain,

This is the response I got from Hardy Customer Support:
"I’ve had a response from the rod builder and unfortunately we have no blanks remaining for you rod, so we wont not be able to re-build the section"

I'm a composites manufacturing engineer, with almost 20 years experience making and repairing carbon fibre aerospace parts so I thought I'd put it to good use and give the repair a go. Here's hoping it holds up 🤞🤞
I think this is a superb idea!

All too many manufacturers are unable to source a spare section a few years after replacing it. Hardy cannot replace a Zenith section already and I doubt the Zephrus and HBX can be too. But they‘ll not be alone. Sage do seem to be an exception. I’ve bust my XP section from a 15 year old rod and whilst it might be £150 and a three month wait; they will source it! OK that opens another debate on the cost but it shows good support during long term ownership.

so a section on folk selling 3/4 of a rod is a superb idea. We all have accidents.

This could be like a game of poker with who is going to get the required part.
Can just see the sell me the middle section. No you sell me the tip section 🤣🤣🤣🤣

On a serious note it is a good idea but will everyone play fair? 🤷‍♂️

Which model of Swift was it Tonymac?

Sounds like you’ve probably done as good a repair as is possible.
I’ve broken two Hardy rods in recent years. The first, my favourite 9 1/2 foot 8 wt. Zenith, by tripping over a rock and falling over backwards while easing a fish into a companions net and basically doubling the tip section over. Hardy couldn’t replace either the section or the rod but for $160Cdn., about £100, they sent me an equivalent Zephrus. That was dealing with the Pure Fishing people in the US. Long story short, I didn’t like the Zephrus nearly as much so I went on EBay and eventually bought a second hand 9 1/2 foot Zenith and switched tip sections and it’s still my favourite rod. The other was a 10 foot 7 wt. Artisan which I had bought second hand, also on EBay. In that case the rod got broken as a guide hoisted a can of gas into his boat and whacked it against the rod in the holder along the side of the boat…top and second sections both crushed. Again Hardy could neither repair or replace the rod so, given the life time warranty, even though I was at least the second owner, they gave me my choice of rods from the current (2021) range. I picked the 12 1/2 foot, 5/6 wt. Ultralite and have been very pleased with it. I am a novice with two handed rods but did use it several times last summer and landed fish to 15 lbs with it.

Two years ago my 9ft Orvis Silver label broke at the bottom joint whilst spey casting. It was under a 25 year guarantee to repair/replace free of charge from breakage of any cause. And to be fair to Orvis they sent me a band new Orvis Recon II, the latest equivalent model, as replacement as they had no spares for my 20 year old rod (y) (y)
I can see this becoming a war of words to which manufacturer supports their old models and which doesn’t.
🤔
I am lucky enough to have a friend that can repair almost any rod breakage. Most good rod builders should be able to do the same.
