I'm already going over gear for my March trip to the Naver. I've got loads of good flies for the early fishing there - many tied by Pat Nicol - including various black and yellow patterns, and some monkey flies that have been good fish producers for me. But when I look back through my catches over the last 10 seasons on the Naver, nothing has done quite as well for me as this modified Willie Gunn Waddington. The difference is winding in a hackle or two Cascade style at the head of the fly. I like the added presence and action this gives the fly. I usually tie some with two hackles for heavier water, and some with one hackle and slightly sparser bodies for lighter flow. These are tied on 25mm shanks, and I connect the double hook with a double strand of 50 lb spectra. I generally go to these from the monkeys when the water gets up into the mid 40s.
