Ally’s Intruder

Here’s mine this month, an intruder based (loosely) on the famous Ally’s Shrimp, although who knows what Mr Gowan would think of this interpretation!

35mm Waddington shank
Hook partridge stinger #4

Rear Station:
Dubbing loop with pearl litebrite, orange seal and orange synthetic dub tied on to form ball
1st hackle hot orange schlappen
2nd hackle hot orange grey mallard
3rd hackle hot orange marabou
2 strands pearl crystal flash tied in top, bottom and both sides
3 strands hot orange ostrich tied same as above
4 strands orange amherst on top and bottom

Body:
rear half red floss, front half black floss
rib gold oval

Front Station:
dubbing ball as at front
Wing 1 hot orange gp tippet
1st hackle hot orange schlappen
2nd hackle composite loop with hot orange arctic fox, orange crystal flash and pearl litebrite
Eyes small orange tungsten dumbbell tied underneath
Wing 2 hot orange ostrich tied in front of eyes

Think that’s everything👍

Figured I’d best get my finger out to get my own entry put together. As I’ve none in my box I therefore decided on a Glenfarclas. The only tweaks are a holographic rather than flat copper tinsel and a couple of strands of gold crystal flash in the wing.

Materials:
Hook: #8 Partridge Patriot
Thread: 8/0 black uni
Tag: 4 turns small oval gold tinsel
Body: Copper holographic tinsel
Rib: fine copper wire
Wing: yellow/orange/black buck tail + two strands gold crystal flash
Cheeks: jungle cock
Hackle: hot orange strung cock
Throat: guinea fowl dyed blue

There’s been a request in the suggestion thread for us to include a material list for flies tied to help any new to tying. Seems like a fair suggestion and so I’d like to suggest that we do that or perhaps include a link to any online resource/reference that was used. It’s certainly something we tried to adopt on the trout fishing forum when posting patterns. Any thoughts? Should it be added as a 12th commandment?

Until the Ally’s came along, this was possibly the most popular of the modern Scottish flies. An absolute classic and, usefully, nice and easy to tie too. ;)

The Munro Killer:

FA90D0DC-C7A0-4D8B-92DE-FB8EB111CEC4.jpeg

Hook: FM Magni #10
Tag: Gold Wire
Tail:Orange Hen Hackle fibres
Body: Black floss
Rib: Oval Gold
Throat Hackle: Orange cock with Blue Guinea Fowl over
Wing: Dyed yellow Squirrel tail
Head: Black

Very well done to Iain for taking this on. What a great competition to start with!!

Great fly GK and thanks for the kind words. I felt slightly guilty in January seeing so many lovely Scottish patterns being tied while knowing what I was going to set!

As usual though the quality and range of flies entered is as high as ever and yours is no exception. It’s going to be tough to pick one out when voting!

It's for that very reason that other members like to copy fly's posted that I post a materials list with any fly's that I post 👍🏻

No Willie Gunn has been posted yet  , so I'll be the first. This one is tied in the Scandinavian way, as the original WG has got no feathers, hackles here are tied using no feathers as well. Hence a list of materials for this fly is quite short: fox and a bit of flashing :D

Ok here goes my first entry.....slightly daunted by the extremely high quality tying.

Willie Gunn inspired micro intruder.....

Just arctic fox with Rhea feather front hackle.

Really struggled to settle on what to tie this month, but I think this fits the brief!
Turned out OK, but was a pain to get a decent pic in the midst of storm Ciara!

Hook: gold salar
Tag: oval gold
Tail: orange polar bear
Body: black floss
Rib: oval gold
1st hackle: sunburst cock
Wing 1: black Arctic fox with 3 strands of pearl krystal flash
Wing 2: hot orange Arctic runner half the length of black.
2nd hackle: orange badger
JC cheeks
Head: black

The standard just keeps improving every month. And that's from starting at a high standard.

Lochy Shrimp

My entry for this month is one of Ross Macdonald’s patterns. This is probably one of his lesser known flies but is deadly when the grilse are about.

Tag: Silver wire
Tail: Black Arctic Runner, Yellow Arctic Runner, a few strands of angel hair
Body: Silver Lite Brite Dubbing
Rib: Silver Wire
Hackle: Blue Cock Hackle (the original is blue badger hackle but I prefer to tie it with a standard blue hackle)

Head: Red

Wow, some stunning flies already, so much talent on here, anyway my effort is a Willie Gunn Needle, very simple and sparse.

Stainless needle tube & liner
Hot orange, yellow and black bucktail
Black thread
Jungle cock cheeks

Beauly Snow Fly

First time tie of this fly. I bottled out of the spun mohair in favour of the orange hackle.
