It really is worrying to see such blatant ignorance.

I watched it back and you could hear the guy with the rod wanting to put it back. Then the cowboy putting pressure on him to kill it, shameful.

I can only think they do it as some sort of trophy kill?

The club wants to be ashamed of themselves & their members conduct.
"The cowboy" ??

Very sad to see, I was expelled from a club for bollocking a local rod for KICKING a hen salmon up the bank hitting it with a stick and leaving it in distress as he went to recover his rod.He finished her off with a ROCK .He reported me for being abusive (local village idiot)and club took his side .What chance have you got!!!

Not quite as black as the one from yesterday! Absolute disgrace - it’s not as if he’s a kid who knows no better.
Mr full on cock is an advert for compulsory catch and release.
Unfortunately the few spoil it for the many Everything should be returned from September, this way everyones a winner in terms of people being able to enjoy the sportfishing and the breeders are given some form of ptotection.Ive seen many a spawned up fat hen killed in autumn dress that was on its last leg of her journey to reproduce, chapped, simply because of the age old addage that im sick of hearing Its my first this year...So What you wont starve!!!! But keep killing the breeders and it might be their last""

Just shorten the season if these breeding fish really need the protection its the only real way, if they are in such a massive decline we should not be fishing for them for a bit of sport. If you cant retain a fish we should close the fishing.

You've hit the nail on the head there about C&R September onwards. We have to release everything before June 16th which is silly, so why not scrap that and have C&R from Sept 1st onwards?

We have enough breeders though. That's not why we should release the fish in that state. There is just no point in killing something that doesn't make good eating.

As Greenlaner said, if we don't have enough breeders, we shouldn't be fishing for them. But we are a long way from that, even with the low fish counts the last 3 years.

Anyway, it's all moot. EA will enforce CCR for the entire season on the Wear either in time for June 17th next year or for the year after. Three years of low counter numbers will be enough to change the Wear's status.

Is that how it works John they use the fish counter numbers. Why then have they not done that with the Tees as its numbers are rubbish.

Imo the fishing for migratory fish on the wear should finish at the end of September,
Years ago we used to get a autumn run where you could still catch clean fish in October,
Sadly those days ended years ago, There has been plenty fish caught in the last couple of weeks,
due to the water height, one beat has had 3/4 of the seasons total in a fortnight, come on lads, its about time to stop! if we want our river to recover,
it starts with us, we are slagging the blokes at Frosterly for killing them, but can we justify catching the same condition fish for sport?

Yes because if they are cared for with the right tackle and bank side manner they swim off safely and go in their way to spawn !

So with that rational there is no reason for any close season. Do they not deserve a bit peace before they get down to spawning, and plenty seatrout spawn long before the end of the traditional season. Should the upper reaches of a river system close before the lower reaches. On the wear most spawning is above Sunderland bridge so end the season upstream of there at the end of September.

All fishing needs a close season to give fish a chance to spawn I’d be more than happy for migratory fishing to end end of September right the way through the system and c&r on all rivers !

I’d be all for a review of moving the close season dates, but it’s more likely that C&R will come in beforehand. We don’t really help the issue with this carry on every season.

They accept the Tees fish counter is rubbish. Wear counters are better and shows long term trends better.

They know the Tees fish counter numbers are pants. They also know the Wear fish counter numbers are much better at indicating trends.

The Wear will eventually be C&R even though the EA know C&R can't help a river to recover.
