If fishers want the fishing shops to stay open simple use them.
My local shop has been getting scissors for my fly-tying since last November [still waiting]. If I had emailed John Norris/Flymakers at Aberdeen I would have had them within a couple of days.

This really sad news but it is a pointer to the way our sport is going.
Not enough young people coming into the sport, possibly more interested in tech games, however the costs play a large part too and probably access as well.
I saw the writing on the wall each time I called in, there seemed to be no escaping the inevitable. If local tackle shops are to survive we need to use them. I get excellent service from the one I use and we have a superb and trusting relationship which results in "delivery to the beat" support for anything I need.
Tackle shops closing will come back and bite us all, we should make an effort to support a local supplier.

Very sad news. Big fan of Malloch and what he achieved so it is sad his name will not live on via the tackle shop. To add insult to injury it looks to me like the Courier got his middle name wrong!

The very least that the Perth City Fathers should do is erect a plaque on the site of one of game angling’s icons

Each time someone posts on here how they've been really smart by buying xy and z extra cheap on the interweb/Amazon remember they are probably accelerating the next time you read another post like this. Peter Cockwill closed Albury Angling last year which was 20 mins drive for me. My nearest game fishing outlet is now Robjents in Stockbridge which is an hour's drive.

The age when you could drop in to a fishing shop for a chat and odds and ends is coming to a close. As for Mallochs, I used to use them regularly for specialist Tay lures like Kynochs and floating red devons. I'm sorry they are no more, although I guess that is also to do with the decline of the Tay generally and youth interest in salmon fishing as well as the internet. However, Malloch's is not just a fishing shop it is a piece of history thanks to its founder. I think Elibank's suggestion is entirely appropriate.

Regards

What a travesty, I live in Wales with family inPerth so a trip to P D Malloch's is always on the agenda for me.However over the years I have noticed the fishing stocks go less and less with shooting taking over. There have been a lot of fishing shops in Perth and all of them close apart from P Ds. THere are a lot of anglers in Perth so I can't understand why a tackle shop can't survive , there is good game, course and sea fishing all close to Perth.I suppose the shops in Dundee will be looking over their shoulder now. Are P Ds going to be doing on line sales or is this it. Just a thought though Fishtech also went at the end of January and that was a big concern

I don’t have any game angling shops near me but I do like to visit them when I can. Like the high street in general there is a decline in sales because of the internet. Shops I guess have to try and offer value in other ways but of course the numbe4 of people fishing, especially salmon fishing is going down as far as I know.
I agree that an on line retailer like Fishtec going out of business is a Concern. We have a wealth of choice of excellent gear but how long will that last.

Kylesider, you are correct in Scott street, right beside the bus stop.As a wee laddie I can remember going in there and annoying the men in there. There used to be a shop in the old high street, one in North Merthen street and one in the Glasgow road.Later on a shop opened by the North Inch but didn't last long.
