Someone asked me for a set of small dry flies ranging from size 16 to 20. An interesting challenge, particularly getting the foam on the balloon Caddis. Photos are the size 20’s but how to get a decent photo 🤷‍♂️

Agreed.
Crackers Iain!

I'm envious, I'd struggle to see the hook, let alone tie on it!!
I use Orvis big eyed dry hooks for my own box or I’d never manage. To tie these I’m using my specs and a magnifying light!

Its worth it though because wee flies like this have given me some red letter days when others have been blanking.

That is a really good set to have early season. The Griffiths gnat in my opinion, is beautifully tied and a most definite Trout attractor.

Wonderful tying Iain. I have recently taken up river trout fishing again, having all but given it up a few years ago. Size 16, 18 and 20 flies seem a whole lot smaller now than they used to!

Wow those are marvellous as they’re not just a wisp of a ducks bottom.
To make such tiny ballon Caddis ect is really something. The hooks are sweet n all. The hookholds off tiny flies are often so good..

I know that feeling! I’m wearing my specs and using a magnifying light to tie them! Tying stuff that small to a tippet is done more by feel than sight and anything smaller I’m putting on tippet under the magnifying light so that I can just loop to loop on the bank😉

Thanks Andrew. I don’t like skipping materials just because I’m tying small and so always try to tie them true to the original bigger ones. 20 or 22 is about as low as I can maintain it though because even nano silk or the 14/0 adds to much bulk below that.

Have you tried these clips Ian . Mine are Orvis and they make putting on small flys easier .
Just thread the tippet through the wire and pull the fly off the wire .

Hope this helps.

That's a great idea! I'll have a look at those. My wife got me the Orvis Eye Tie threader which has different slot sizes for different hook sizes but I can't read which slot is which!
