Default Changing drag setting on Danielsson L5W 6nine

Above reel came set at drag config 3 which I find just a little too much at itís lowest setting.
Need to ease the drag off slightly . Which config should I be working towards ? 1 or 5 ?
Iíve consulted the manual which I find as clear as mud.
Surely weíre not expected to mess about with a multitude of washers ?

    Help !

ps Does anyone else finding changing spools on these reels just a little fiddly even indoors ?
Not looking forward to trying to do it on the river bank with cold fingers

You may not need to adjust the washers. Remove the drag kn0b and slightly adjust the bolt (that holds the drag mechanism) in an anti clockwise direction. Refit drag kn0b (as per instructions - very important) and test. It is very much trial and error until you get the setting suitable for you. If this fails, you will need to adjust the drag washers as per instructions. 1 is the lightest setting.

Removing the spool is a doddle. Slacken the main lock nut, but only just enough to allow the spider to move. Rotate the spider, remove the spool. Apply new spool to lugs, move spider into position, tighten.

Put like that it sounds simple , Michael.
In practice , I find itís a fiddle diddle.
    And I have small hands.

Heaven knows how someone with King Kong fingers would manage.

    Nice reel though.

The trick is to slacken the spider by the absolute minimum amount, then it's easier to relocate the spool. A bit of practice helps, but my spool only comes on and off once per year, for the end of season service. There again I don't have your amazing library of lines.

And yes, it's a wonderful reel. How they deliver that level of engineering at the price is beyond me, even though selling directly to the public without wholesalers and retailers probably cuts it my at least 40-50%.

It's well seen your job is to turn car ferries.
Even I can change the spool easily, tip is not to wear welders gloves when you are doing it.
Altering the drag setting is something else though, I did it once on my 1st Control which was set to handle 50lbrs from the Aaroy and had to phone Tomas to talk me through it. Subsequent purchases I specified the factory setting and have never had to touch them.
    Great reels.

There is a set of videos on YouTube that deal with some of the issues. They are also on the Danielsson website.
