Default River Irvine Leigh Milton Mill Dam

Here are some pics courtesy of my dad of the River irvine at the Leigh milton mill dam stretch.
The pics were taken in early december.
As you will see it is a nice bit of water but unfortunately the river suffers from a huge amount of rubbish and debris which is deposited on the banks after high water. This rubbish just seems to lie around waiting on the next spate to remove it which is a huge shame.
Anyway rubbish aside here it is.
This is the view from the top of the dam showing the old mill building (what a house it would make)

A closer look at the dam shows the damage caused by a huuuuggggeee tree that was stuck behind the dam that was moved by the last big spate. It has created a far easier path for the salmon to move over the dam but may well have made the rest of the dam unsecure.

    another view

The run at the base of the dam is great for the fly at the right height.

looking upstream from the dam is the frst of the viaducts and good spinning water

A view through the arches shows the second viaduct and some deposits left on the bridge by the last spates

First viaduct again. the bit of water ifront of the trees on the far bank is a great lie and fishes well with the fly in medium water.

Strange bunch here we don't bother with dogs we walk the cats instead

looking dowstream standing at the mill.

Old mill workings (nothing that a bit of elbow grease wouldn't sort.)

Anybody brought a black bag (didn't think so!)

    here's more

    and more

What a pity that all this is left lying around to spoil what is otherwise a stunning piece of water in a stunning piece of countryside.

    Default mill

I remember the mill well. Many years ago it was a poachers paradise. Since the dam broke the fish seem to make it over in much greater numbers than they did before.

The breaking of the dam is the best thing that ever happened to the river.
