    Default The Don Hatchery

As a follow on to the 'hatchery' thread in the general section, here are some pics of the opperation on the Don.

1st the gates are opened and the river flows through the trapping pen.

The fish that are hopefully trapped in the pen are now caught by net

The fish are transported over to the main hatchery where they are stored in pens. The pens are incorporated into a feeder burn which flows into the Don.

When the time comes for the eggs or milt to be stripped, the fish are taken from the pens to a tank where the fish are sedated.

A hen is selected and a wet cloth is tucked under her pectoral fins for easy handling. The eggs are then stripped into dry plastic bowls.

A cock fish is then selected and the milt is stripped into the hens eggs.

Fresh water is then added to the eggs and milt. The addition of the water activates the fertilization process.

The stripped fish are then put into a recovery tank.

The eggs are laid out in trays in the hatchery.

The next 2 pictures are from a salmon sea trout hybid that was caught in the pens. The eggs weren't used. The Don superintendant Jim Kerr said this was the first one he'd seen on the Don in 28yrs.

A few ramdom pictures of the fish showing their spawning colours.
Check the dentures on this one!

Great pics. How do you sedate the fish before stripping?

    Thanks

Colin I think they use benzocaine to knock the fish out.
