When did it become "a thing" to target coloured salmon?

Thats exactly what I mean! Thank you Andrew B!

When did it become "a thing" to target coloured salmon?

That's exactly what I meant midgydug. I really don't want the entire river to close in August. Anglers can fish till the end of the season if they so wish. Not a problem. I just can't understand why someone who lives virtually on the banks of the river, less than 10 miles from the tide would...

When did it become "a thing" to target coloured salmon?

As I said earlier, I was basing all my opinions on my own river where everyone has access to the entire river for the entire season. Theres no beats or booking or anything else. You buy a permit and fish where you want, when you want. The river is open to 20th October. From the end of...

When did it become "a thing" to target coloured salmon?

I think I actually mentioned that in the past. I just can't believe that there's no grilse or summer salmon in a river like the tweed in July. I'm sure some people would love the opportunity to say they've fished the river even if there weren't that many fish about and, man, if you did manage...

When did it become "a thing" to target coloured salmon?

That really isn't, and was never, what this thread was meant to be about. Let's turn things round slightly. If you could fish a river every day from April to October and you have 10, 20, 30 or 40 fish for the season at the end of the September, what justification can there be to go out your way...

When did it become "a thing" to target coloured salmon?

That system you described for the Dee just screams common sense to me. If only would rivers would follow suit.

When did it become "a thing" to target coloured salmon?

Perhaps this might describe things better. Everything I've mentioned here is based on my own river Faughan in Northern Ireland. Here is a link to the river map on the club website... https://www.faughan.org/map-of-river Now, anyone buying a permit has access to entire length of the river 24...

No one commenting on this thread fed fish to their dogs.

When did it become "a thing" to target coloured salmon?

Dates can be changed here. The opening date of May 20th and closing date of October 20th was decided in the 1930s I think it was. I have the newspaper article saved on my computer. The season before that started on April 1st and ended on 30th September. Anglers did not agree with this as fish...

When did it become "a thing" to target coloured salmon?

I didn't say fish only spawn away up rivers. I live on the middle river and love counting redds every winter. What I am saying is that there is virtually no chance of catching a fresh fish in the very top end of my river after September these days. Let those fish be and let anglers concentrate...

IFI Seeks Views on Ways to Improve Salmon and Sea Trout Tagging Scheme

That all seems pretty reasonable. Allowing anyone to keep 10 fish a season if they wish on the rivers where it is allowed. The Loughs Agency cut the number of tags on the entire Foyle System to one single tag for spring fish and two for the rest of the season. All this did was restrict those...

When did it become "a thing" to target coloured salmon?

I was responding to a post where someone said that if fish died they'd be seen along the river. I was merely pointing out that I do. Every year. I probably spend more at the river during the winter than I do during the season. The peace and quiet and trying to spot redds or seeing fish spawning...

Just out of interest, how does the tagging system work in the South? How many do you get etc.?

When did it become "a thing" to target coloured salmon?

I think your two posts on this thread are the closest to my own feelings on the matter. My own feelings have always been that the freshest of fish have the greatest chance of recovery. It really has nothing to do with eggs or spawning as such, but being in the best condition, physically, to be...
