Several interesting points particularly about heavily fished water and also the temperature fish will take a smallish fly on a floater. A.H.E Wood was adamant he wasn't too bothered about water temperature as long as it was lower than the air. Of course he was also fishing on very lightly fished well stocked waters.
His observations of fish "going stiff" and then ignoring flies subsequently certainly agree with the only time I was able to watch the reaction of a group of fish to a friends fly.
I also now know why my attempts with a hitched fly in Norway weren't remotely successful despite it being a favoured method.

Most of my salmon last year were caught by default on nymphs or small trout wet flies.

I definitely think we fish too big.

Thinking back when I used to fish the Finn a lot in the late 80's and 90's, sometimes you got nothing on a size 10, but hit fish on 14s and 16s after a fly change.
