    There are testing dyes that do that for tracing pollution sources etc. You can get them in all sorts of pretty colours so you can stick them in several systems and see which colour comes up to point the finger at the culprit.

    On my shelf at the moment I've got some from Horobin and Monument

    They're inert although they're dramatic when used very dilute,
    I don't think you're supposed to just peg them in the river.

    I know a fella that uses these in his work, he put some down the toilet in a Ballyliffin hotel once and asked the owner to come and have a look and explain why the beach had suddenly changed colour.
