    Default catching running fish?

Ok, so picture the scene, its a medium sized salmon river, ( let's say its the North Esk for example) its late spring ( end of April, beginning of May) the waters not cold its 50 degrees F plus, there's a good height of water and the fish are running hard, head and tailing past you all day.

You're fishing all the likely spots ( tails of pools after a bit of fast water) you fish the heads where there's a bit of a narrowing that might cause them to pause. You're fishing high in the water on one rod, fast and square with a big fly, and then slower and deeper with another rod.

The only fish you've hooked have come adrift.....typical short taking, running fish...your fishing early, and late to try to find a resting fish, but results are poor...

What do you to to maximise your chances?

Fish, big square and fast? Hang a smaller fly on their running line? Fish shallow, fish deep?

They will rest somewhere, even if only for a few minutes. You just need to fish the beat long enough to know where.

I would fish a smallish fly on a full floater or inty tip, not too fast and not far below the surface. I would also prepare to be very frustrated!

    Default Catching Running Fish

Have a look at Ambush Tactics on Just One Week. it's not revolutionary but it might stimulate some original thoughts.
