Default Salmon Hook Sizes and Gapes

I have just received a very helpful email from Mark Hamnett of Partridge regarding hook sizes and gapes.

I sent Partridge an email asking for details of their range of hooks so that I could keep from crossing swords with any bailiffs on the River Finn about their single hook, 7mm gape rule; and to help anglers in making our hook choices when converting to different hooks than we are used to.
The details I thought that would help me are Overall Hook Length, Shank Length, Gape and Weight of the hook in each size.
I am used to tying my shrimp flies on a treble hook and want to continue fishing with flies of a similar size that will behave in a similar fashion. I am also going to cut away two of the hooks on some of my existing treble hook flies (and de-barb them) and wanted to know what hook size I could do this to.

While he stated that their specifications are confidential, he did provide the following information that should at least keep me right. I hope it saves some others a bit of head scratching out there.

    Hook Size - Gape (mm)
    Partridge Traditional Bartleet - Code CS10/1 Size-10 Gape-7.5mm
    Partridge Supreme Bartleet - CS10/2 Size-10 Gape-7.5mm
    Partridge Salar Single - Code CS14/1 Size-9 Gape-7.5mm
    Partridge Salar Double - Code CS14/2 Size-9 Gape-7.5mm
    Partridge Salar Tube Single - CS14T/1 Size-9 Gape-7.5mm
    Partridge Salar Tube Double - CS14T/2 Size-9 Gape-7.5mm
    Partridge Bomber Dry - Code CS42 Size-10 Gape-7.5mm
    Partridge Barbless - Code F3 Size-8 Gape-7.5mm
    Partridge Single Salmon - Code M Size-8 Gape-7mm
    Partridge Low Water Single - Code N Size-6 Gape-8mm
Partridge Nordic Tube Single - Code NTS Size-8 Gape-7.5mm
    Partridge Single Wilson - Code O1 Size-12 Gape-7mm
    Partridge Double Wilson - Code O2 Size-10 Gape-7.5mm
    Partridge Double Salmon - Code P Size-6 Gape-7.5mm
    Partridge Low water Double - Code Q Size-8 Gape-7mm
    Partridge Long Shank Treble - Code X1 and X2 Size-6 Gape-7mm
Partridge Needle Eye Tube Treble - Code X3 Size-6 Gape-7mm
    Partridge Salar Tube Treble - Code X4 Size-7 Gape-7mm

*is there a way of creating a table for info like this? I tried to copy and paste it from the email and it came up worse looking than this*

If this information is useful, I dont see any reason why we couldnt create our own table to show this sort of information across various manufacturers' ranges.

(i don't know why Amazon are creating links to their site - it wasnt me )

Very interesting Mounre Gold! Doesn't leave much room for manouver!
One of the best skills that an angler can ever develop is knowing the difference between passing the time and wasting it!

Awhile ago I did a little pictorial on my blog about salmon hook sizes. It might interest some of you. The River's Course: Salmon Fly Hooks...or when is a 10 an 8?

That is a 1/4 inch grid the hooks are photographed on.

I think we can expect some major sell offs of treble hooks where the gape is too large for the new regs !!

I have just spoken to Partridge of Redditch and requested all single and treble hook sizes / gapes,

He said that would be very difficult as there are 20000 different hook size/gapes that are manufactured ? 80 % of their sales are exported all over the world. It was a very interesting conversation to say the least.

The EA are really upskuttling game fishing (and Sea Bass fishing too) ,with their gobbly Gook hook proposals.

I assume all EA enforcement officers will be supplied with Vernier Gauges for checking hook gapes
