Well having had the pleasure of his company for a few days over Chrismas I have to say that seen him in full and also having observed his general manner I would say that Lab/Springer is the mostlikely parentage...almost certainly a "combination dog" as Mark Twain would have it.
Called Rollo, he really is one of the best house dogs I have come across. Although glued to whoever was on cooking duties never once was he in the way and also could find by nose a tennis ball pre-placed in deepest cover. I would love to have had a go at training him.

Picking up yesterday, good shooting day with the hills capped with snow and a good stiff wind.

Good Dogs from Years ago
Looking at your two labs there Wafty Cranker, they look a great pair - reminded me of the pair of labradors I had a few years ago now.
I went searching and found an old photograph, here is a picture of what is probably two of the best dogs I have ever owned and they both came along almost together, Indy, the younger one on the left followed on and learnt from the old master, Oscar.
Must admit when each one passed I shed a tear and raised a glass to them, real pals, they gave me countless years of totally faithful service.
Anyone who has ever had real working dogs know how much of an important part they play in a days shooting - from a top driven grouse or Pheasant day to hedge backing with just you and the dog, it is something special and you cannot do it properly without them.
