Default Leader catching on hook

Iam finding that iam commonly getting a tangle with the leader line getting wrapped round the hook resulting in me never being sure if the fly is fishing correctly i used 15lb maxima and a tucked blood knot any ideas what is causing this it is not a tailing loop just the very end of the leader

Hoopy,

Are you using a tapered leader, either made up yourself or a bought one?

What length of leader are you normally using?

Hi hoppy

does the leader wrap around the fly and form a knot at the front? I used to get it a lot with some less than perfect casting days, since my consistancy has increased the problem has dissappeared also

Sounds like the quite short leader was causing kick back especially with the softer nylon but the stiffer fluorocarbon largely prevents this occurring.

I once had a problem with hooks ups and tangles when fishing bottle tubes, the standard tapered leader was too long and light. I solved the problem by using tapered fluorocarbon leaders (Orvis Mirage) with all the thin end cut off. It does not really seem to matter how thick the fluorocarbon is where it joins the bottle tube and there were no more problems or tangles.

Default Leader tying eround the hook 2 ideas

Used to get this when I insisted on fishing light leaders, the leader needs to be stiff enough to support the fly a bit out of the water. This is obviously not the case with a 3" brass tube, you shouldn't get the problem anyway and the leader would need to be fencing wire. Use a stiffer leader than Maxima, say Seaguar or if you want a nylon, try some of the Variavas sea mono's or the Rio.

The other thing I've seen is kicking the rod tip too late in the casting stroke and a little downward, you can see a little loop develop ahead of the fly.

It may sound like I know what I'm talking about, don't be fooled, I just cast badly on a regular basis and you get to recognise yet another duff cast!!
